You are absolutely correct, and hopefully the whining will be minimal if nothing is taken away from the purists or digital artists. Don't get me wrong, I love the minimal challenges and wish we had more, but I want the choice to try new things those expert editing challenges offered.

That's just it. By having other options it gives others a chance to try something new and be guided by people who are already familiar with the new styles and editing. If the member finds that they don't like that style...they don't have to leave, as there are still all the other versions of editing available...but it helps out so many that are curious and want to give it a try...or those who prefer using a certain type of editing.

It's like going to a buffet restaurant...on the buffet tables there are loads of different types of dishes...many of which the guest would never normally try if they had to pay for it normally as a dish on its own. But because it is there on the buffet, they are more willing to give it a try. And if they don't like it...they can leave it and try a different dish or go back to their old faithful dish that they are comfortable with.

So get out of your chair and go and look at all the dishes available...and give them a try...you may just surprise yourself!!!!

Alternatively, we could have a special open challenge each week. The paying members could take turns writing the rules for this special challenge, and deal with the images that did not meet the rules.

We have a whole section of of the Forums dedicated to Side Challenges and Tournaments where you get to make up the rules, the topics, whatever ... you just don't get space on the front page and a voting system -- you have to discuss the photos, and figure out your own rankings if ranking is important to you.

Personally, I agree -- there should be more challenges using alternate editing rules, but that the Basic and Advanced should continue to provide a framework for the challenge schedule. Note that SC members do not schedule challenges, or know which challenges will pop up at rollover.

But you guys have the power and the responsibility to be the go-between. YOU are the ones who can really point out to Langdon & Co that this request pops up again and again and again, and it would be NO big deal to finally implement it.

It's really hard to twist his arm from 3000 miles away. Maybe we can arrange to have his first-born kidnapped and held for ransom ...

If that's what it takes to make him pay a bit of attention to all his customers, then you have my blessing to go ahead with that plan.

OK this is probably the last comments I will make on this subject!

to the people saying there are no grey areas in the current rules, does that mean that everybody that gets a DQ are either a deliberte cheat or stupid???
the SC say that not all DQs are unanimous, so that means that the people who make the rules don't always interpreate them the same way. It doesn't get much greyer than that!!

With the rules as they are now, the site is pushing away images like alex's swan and stars. Is that a good or bad??

to people that say the expert rules go to far, I would say that i wouldn't want to see images of unicorns leaping over rainbows etc etc, and i expect these kind of images would get voted down heavily.
The fact that Alex's image scored so highly shows that there is a place for the expert rule set when it is done as good that.
If the minimal rule set is used more, that would keep the photography purists happy as well!

Only in challenges. There are no rules regarding what can be posted in your portfolio other than the TOS.

As far as over the top shopped images go, don't count on them getting voted down heavily. A few challenges with the expert rules I think is necessary, however don't feel it would benefit the site to convert all challenges to expert.

There is a place for all the rules sets as they stand and possible one more that would be similar to advanced but allow overlays.

There is an old adage that goes 'My House - My Rules'.

We all knew what we were signing up for and there are lots of other places to be if the rules don't suit.

Personally I admire the ethos of this site and prefer to see photographs by photographers not images by graphic designers.

I see stunning work here and I realise just how much there is to learn.
