I have a Nikon D60. The lens that came with the camera 18-55mm works fine. I also purchased the Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED VR - and I tried it for the first time tonight. I cannot get auto focus to work and the lens only works in Manual. Is this right or am I doing something wrong? Also, I've been trying to do a Depth of Field photo. Object clear, background fuzzy. I've set the f/stop at every stop I have and I can't seem to achieve it. Can you give me some direction or point me in the right direction. Every time I think I'm doing well something like this frustrates the heck out of me. Thanks for the help.

To minimize the depth of field, use the largest aperture (lowest f numbers, like f/4). It also enhances the effect to zoom all the way in to 200mm. If you take a portrait of someone's head at 200mm and f/4, the background should be noticeably blurred. ETA: You'll want to use the aperture priority mode for this shot, and set it to f/4. It will probably choose a slow shutter speed if there isn't good light, so try it in the daylight.

As for the AF problem, I know that some Nikon lenses don't AF on some Nikon cameras... Let me look for more info on this.

Ken Rockwell talks about the D60 autofocus here. An excerpt:

"The D60 only autofocuses with the latest AF-S (and old professional AF-I) lenses. Most traditional (screw-type) AF lenses from 1986 through today will not autofocus on the D60. If your lens says "AF-S," you're fine."

Your 55-20 is an AF-S lens, so it should autofocus. Make sure the switch on the lens is set to "A" and the camera focus mode (MENU > Custom Setting (pencil) > 02 Focus Mode) is not at Manual.

Jeff you are the best. Thanks so much for your help. I'm going to check the lens right now!

It is an AF-S lens - so if I'm reading it right the auto focus should work right?

That's right - it should autofocus. But there are options to manual focus on both the lens and camera menu as described below which may trip you up. Make sure they're both set to auto.
