I've decided to make the permanent switch to the mac world, and for the time being, I'm importing all my old stuff into iPhoto. New stuff is going in, also, and I use that to check stuff out that I want to edit further in Photoshop (I don't want to buy Lightroom at the moment).
My issues is that my internal hard drive will fill up. What happens then? |

You should probably put all of that stuff on an external drive anyway -- save the internal drive for the OS and applications. Having PS access image data from the same disc as the application's running from usually slows it down.
It's easier to back up from an external drive anyway -- you can buy two the same size and mirror them ...

| You can use multiple iphoto libraries with iphoto buddy and keep one on your system and others on external HDs. As far as I know you can't split a single library between two drives. |

That's what Time Machine is for: to backup to an external drive.
If you drop all your images into iPhoto, you might find it a little cumbersome to extract collections on the fly, for whatever purpose. When you're moving files, you'll be doing this out of iPhoto's interface, since you can't (shouldn't) manipulate the iPhoto library. For this reason, I'd find it more practical to store whatever images you'd like to have at your disposition in dedicated folders instead. I keep mine inside the Home folder > Pictures.
I find it easier to navigate here from other applications, including iPhoto.

| I have about a dozen iPhoto libraries and switch between them with iPhoto Library Manager. It just takes one click to open the set I need from any drive. |

| Thanks, everyone! Great options here. And zeuszen, thanks for the reminder to set up Time Machine to automatically back stuff up. I have two external drives and I manually backed up when I was on the PC, so it'll be good to learn how to do it with the mac. |
