Hi guys,

Firstly I have NO CLUE what I need in a monitor - I'd like it big-ish.

The AUS$ sucks right now and so I need to be tight-ish.

Is this Dell Monitor any good for my photography needs?

If not, can anyone steer me towards the details I will want in my new monitor - you know the things I'd wished I knew before I buy etc. Like do I need it to swivel?

All advice much appreciated. Oh and budget not more than $400AUS.

if you mean 24" by saying biggish, maybe you should have a look at the Hyundai W241D (24 inch) (second one from the top). a pal of mine is gonna get this one, and it gets good reviews even for graphic usage, and it has a s-pva panel, which is a lot better for displaying realistic colors, contrasts and grey gradients (if that's the right word) than the usual TN panels.

eta: the dell monitor you referred to has a TN panel.

eta2: Here's a review for the dell monitor, it's in german though. but i skimmed at it for you and most people said they wouldn't recommend this monitor, nor for gaming and even less for graphic purposes, because the tn panel produces oversaturated colors (which can probably be fixed somehow), but also has a bag angle of view, which means if you look at the monitor from a slightly different angle the colors and contrasts will change, and if you look at it from a closer distance the colors and brightness will be different at the bottom (brighter) and the top (darker).

I found this article to be very instructive. He ends up buying one for about $650(us), above your stated budget I know, but hopefully you'll find the article helpful.

Thank you both for your replies.

I get that the Dell would not be for me and I appreciate the recommendations on the other two, but I can't seem to find the Hyundai here in Australia yet and the HP one in the article is in excess of $1200AUS dollars!!!

SO back to the drawing board.

Any other advice would be GRATEFULLY appreciated.

That dell appears similar tot he one I have at work (but my work monitor has a smaller screen). I know mine displays some fine nuances of color that my display at home cannot show. Probably a decent buy.
