Im considering begining to expand my equipment collection. Right now Im shooting on the Rebel XT. I have the kit lens, and the 75-300mm (non IS), For lighting I have been using the pop up flash and /or a lamp with a silver hood from the hardware store. (as you can see im on a limited budget) I work at best buy so I an get a pretty good deal on a generic flash made by sunpack PF30X //www.tocad.com/sunpak/flashunits.html
I have never worked with a flash other than the pop up. How is this going to benifit my work. Is it worth it to get the generic flash or should I save up my money and get the actual canon flash (speedlight 430 EX II) which would cost me between $100 - $200 more than the generic. I dont remeber the price for that flash. Since I havent worked with this equipment before, I dont know what the benifit / downside to one vs the other besides price is. I also dont understand fully how it will help my photographs.
Any insight is apreciated.

| id get the speedlight. its by far worth it. i have the rebel xti, and the pop-up just doesnt work that well. its well worth spending the money to get a good flash. perhaps some strobes in the future |

i have the 430 and I love it. however, if i were you..i would save the extra 150 and get the next step up.
580 EX
. also...get some type of diffuser. :)
mine has helped out my pics ALOT
here is a materntiy pic of my wife that I took today with my flash and a simple black fabric tacked to the wall.

Generic flashes will only make you buy twice. My Canon 550ex has now been through 3 cameras and has been well worth the money..... after I tried one free hand-me-down generic and I also bought another generic. If you get one of the newer canon flashes, (580ex etc) it comes with a built in device to trigger a second flash. If it turns out that you never use it, you can sell it for a decent price too. They hold their value.

Buy the Speedlight!
You'll be amazed at how good indoor shots look when you can bounce the flash. |

Photography is about light. If you can't find it then you have to make it - that is what flashes are for.
As to the generic flash, I'd avoid it. Get a used canon or even a sigma ef500DG super which can be had for under $200 most any day of the week.
