I put before/after attempts with Photoshop X2 in my portfolio. I just started using it and started playing with this image. Shot it a couple of days ago - very foggy and overcast day in San Francisco.

The original is closer to how it looked on the day but I felt it was just too flat and dull. Any thoughts really appreciated.

Yup, well done for resisting the urge to go mad on the filters.. the image benefited from the contrast adjustments.

Thanks Simms. I guess I have to start involving myself more here. I see a ton of views but in my portfolio I see about 2:1 to the altered one. Why even bother if folks don't look at both? I am concerned about the edits which need folks to compare. I guess I was expecting more out of this place, but like all message boards it takes time to become more known (aka popular) and get some responses.

As far as that shot - in some ways I prefer the original as it really reflected lighting of the day. The modified one reflected my mood as according to the weather it was supposed to be sunny and since i got my dslr I have not had a single sunny day I was able to take some shots.

Regardless, thanks Simms for replying.

That's Paint Shop Pro X2, not Photoshop X2, which doesn't exist...

It's a nice, serene shot and an effective edit, though for my money much of the charm of the original is in the steely colors, which are very true to what I'd expect to see. My sister lives in the Bay Area and I'm a California native who lived in the Carmel Highlands for 4 years, so I have a strong conception of what that scene looks like. I love that steely, foggy light.

Try to keep that tonality while getting the contrast and general pop closer to the reworked version, maybe bring a little touch of cool green intensity in on the plants, would be my suggestion. Also, this hsot would benefit from some subtle edge vignetting I think.

Maybe something along these lines:

Thanks for the input, Bear. Yes, my faux pas. All I have used over the past several years is MS Photo Editor. Hard to get the word "Photo" out of my head - Paint Shop Pro. (blush)

I think you're right about the steely effect. I should tone things down. Mainly go for a bit more contrast but retain more of the grey. I think I was just hoping for a sunny day to shoot after so many cloudy ones so kind of over-compensated! LOL
