Yes I know that there are some other flashes used. I just want to know what that is called specifically that one that he uses and where I can get one. |

Alien Bees makes an affordable ring flash.

Others are much more expensve, but there are several out there from the major lighting manufacturers. |

And, it says you can just hand hold it. That is what I was looking for in response to the OP. That guy's is handheld and I didn't see a power cord going anywhere but to the camera. |

It still needs to be plugged in, but there are battery packs available. |

It can fire from your camera. You plug it in thru the pc connection. Or you can buy a cord to hook it into your hotshoe.

Another way you could do it is by using the Ray Flash ringflash adapter. Here's the Canon Version @ Adorama.
Strobist talks about it here.
ETA: I think I found what he uses: Profoto Pro-7 Ringflash, for use with the Pro-7B generator. The generator will put you back $4,100, the flash $2,600. Start saving!

That's for synch; it still needs an external power source. Primary power source is a regular wall plug, 120v. There are portable power packs available for this sort of thing though. They are expenisve too.

All that Pro Foto gear is pricey. It's great stuff, but you pay for it. |

I know jbsmithana (and/or his wife, whose name escapes me at 2am, sorry) has a ringlight, though not just like that one. They were letting some try it out at the Calgary GTG. Maybe you could PM him for info? |

Leo,
The ring I use as seen on the videos is a Pro-7 ring by Profoto:
//www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/163682-REG/Profoto_701_103_Pro_7_Ringflash_Lamphead.html
Outfitted with a softlight reflector:
//www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/136246-REG/Profoto_505_511_Softlight_Beauty_Dish_Reflector.html.
You can use all Pro7 line of packs to power it. Personally I only use battery packs, and in my case it is powered primarily by the 7B.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, guys!
Here's a closer look at the set up in discussion:

Here's the ring/Panasonic LX3 combo. I show this because I sometimes get asked if the ring mount can adapt with smaller bodies.
