I was perusing the magazine racks at B&N tonight and found PhotoLife, a Canadian photography magazine. One of the articles, "Recharge Your Creative Eye" by Andre Gallant really caught my eye.

Aside from the gorgeous images included with the article, the idea has merits. He talks of a 30 day project in which he shot a full roll (36 exposures) of film every day for 30 days. He also offers some great suggestions for personal photo assigments.

I'd highly recommend the magazine if you can get it. The website has the highlights and some of the images, but not the articles.

I totally agree. Photolife is an excellent magazine. The images are awesome, and the articles are very interesting ... photographer's philosopy and approach to photography, instead of the technical aspect of photography.

Can you explain in a few words what the thought behind shooting a full film each day is ? How does that recharge one's creative eye ?

I would find it difficult this time of year, it is dark when I leave for work, it is dark again when I return home, weather in the weekends is usually grey and dull. So outdoors opportunities are limited.

Well, having not read the article, the only thing I can think is that it would force you to really push yourself to capture interesting photographs - to see things that you do not normally see or take for granted. I imagine that probably some would find this more difficult than others, but it would be a challenge in itself to try to overcome the photographers brand of "writer's block" that you could be feeling.

Actually, the author started the project (in Canada mind you) in the middle of November and worked on it through December...The fact that you think the outdoors is uninteresting at this time of year is a great reason to actually do this project. Think of all the neat things to see this time of year!

If you live farther north than I do, you have snow, frost, ice. If you live down here, we have Camellias blooming this month. There are holiday decorations and holiday shoppers. Kids will be out of school for the holiday soon and be on the prowl for things to do in public places. The beach in the winter, if you are lucky enough to live near one, can be an amazing place too. The ocean seems to froth more on the shore during the winter and the light this time of year is fabulous.

And think of it this way...it's only 36 photos a day. How many of us will shoot several hundred when we have something particular in mind? Why not work in some time for some more "random" shots. Photograph things you might not normally photograph. I know that my small P&S is going to get a workout this month because starting today, I'm going to do this project.
