After using Gimp for a few hours I've found:
For fixing up basics, levels, curves, hue, sat, color balance and all the other "photoshop" adjustments, it works just fine.
Layers are the same as PS. Layer masks work perfectly. I've done some double exposure stuff and it works just as well as PS.
The only things I don't like are:
1. When making an adjustment, it "paints" the adjusted preview "down" like a roller. In PS it is adjusted all at once.
2. This is the biggest flaw IMO....There are no true adjustment layers. For example; if you want to adjust curves, you have to dup a layer and the go to the menu "color". It drops and you see levels, curves, hue/sat etc...
You choose what you want...curves. The familiar box comes up with the curves "line"...you adjust and "ok". However, it applies it to that layer. There is no going back again to adjust or tweak. So this curves layer is simply another layer with curves applied to it.
What I have found is that this means your files get HUGE. My cam is a 12mp and just editing one shot with curves, levels, sat, and color balance makes a gigantic size file!
However, this program is FREE and well worth the price ! I'd say that once they add true adjustment layers, Gimp will be just about everything PS is. IMO this is when they will start to sell the product.
I'm wondering how the Adobe people feel about a product that is so close to their baby?
