I installed the demo version of CS4 extended and am very tempted to pay for the upgrade, but something strange is going on. At first I thought it was much faster than CS3, but now I just cannot see changes. It was probably doing it all along and I just didn't notice.

For example, if I turn a layer off or on there is no change. But, if I click on a brush or something else, then the change comes in immediately. Or if I go back in the history, no change again until I click on something else. I guess for some reason it's not redrawing the screen until it receives additional input, and it sounds like a software issue to me, but I find it hard to believe that they'd release something like that.

I thought it was something on my system and rebooted and started shutting down everything except CS4 and then realized that it was using very little resources so figured it was something besides my aging computer.

Has anybody experienced this problem?

Edit: plugins such as Nik Efex work fine and show changes in real time, and when I save my processor shoots up to nearly 100%, so that's normal also.

See if GPU support is on or off - if its on turn it off.. its a new feature and still a bit touchy.

Not sure if your system is laging, in another wordings, it might be taking long time to do something, and when you do something else, it cancels the previous command, not sure.
Btw, I just got the CS4 my self, and still raising my education level.
I've found this site is wonderfuly useful //tv.adobe.com/#pg+1582

I tried it with just about everything else shut down and it does the same thing. I have plenty of RAM available and CS4 just sits there using 10-20% of resources and does nothing. When I save, the resources shoot up and it acts normal. Also, some things like hue/saturation work like normal.

GPU support is on, I think. That's the OpenGL thing, right? I will make sure the drivers for my card are updated and see if that makes a difference.

My trial version is doing the same thing. I apply a change and cannot see it unless I minimize and then expand the window. It does this sporadically. It will open initially, but then after a bit, do this thing where I have to minimize and expand the windows to see my changes. What is this GPU support thing and how can I turn it off?

Edit: Never mind, I found the OpenGL thing, if that's it.

Another strange thing I forgot to mention, when I first open it I get a couple errors, although those didn't start until I set it up to point to my CS3 plugins folders, and I don' think that's the issue. But, nearly every menu is grayed out until I open a file. This includes the OPEN menuitem, so I have to open something by right-clicking on the file and then choosing CS4. After that it works fine.

Yep, same thing for me with the errors once I included my plug ins. I'm wondering if anyone who has purchased CS4 has these issues as well, or if it's just something to do with the free trial.

But this is one of the biggest advantages of CS4, the accelerated graphic cards, smooth zooming and so on, If the GPU or GL can identify your graphic card, there shouldn't be a problem, not my case anyway, but if not, then you might need to research if there is an update for your graphic card. my 2 cents.

The smooth zooming is a gimmick, as is the flick panning. the real advantage is the ability to zoom in to 33% or 66% (and other weird zoom sizes) and not having the jaggies.. very handy.

It's the plugins. After messing with it for quite a while I unchecked the box for the additional plugins and now it's working fine. I had already manually installed Genuine Fractals and now I guess I need to start working on the others. Yahoo.

Everytime I start it up, it brings up the default tab groups on the right instead of the ones that I setup. Is there anyway to get it leave it alone?
