I was thinking about a public calendar of DPChallenge Birthdays and Events. Someday hopefully, we'll see one integrated into DPC.
In the meantime, I have an idea. I was thinking we could manage one easily if we could find a "group" environment, where it takes little management, and people can add their own birthdays and events. The only requirement/control would be they would have to be a registered DPChallenge user or member.
The closest I could find was Yahoo Groups. I created a sample group, and turned off all features that I could, except for the calendar.
The only catch is that, to prevent spammers and other evil doers, I set it so that a moderator would have to approve people when they join. Right now, that's me.
It's set up for anyone to view it. You do have to join the group, and get approved by me (or another moderator, as we expand), to post an event or birthday. The interface isn't as nice as Google Calendars, but there's no "group" mode that I could find for that, where everyone in the group can add their own birthday.
Anyway, I'm willing to take it for a little test run. So go to it, join, add your birthdays if you want, and any GTGs you have planned.
//groups.yahoo.com/group/dpchallenge/join
THIS IS UNOFFICIAL. Done by Neil the member, not Neil the SC member. THIS IS A TEST for interest and features.
If you know of a better way to do this, or a better site, speak up soon. :)
Edit: It should allow anyone to view the calendar in "month" mode., not just members. We'll see. |

Why can't we get Langdon to implement it into the site...and people can nominate in their preferences whether they want to have their birthdate included or not.

A tip for those adding their birthdays...
Select "Birthday" as the event type. It will put a cake by your name
Select "This is an all day event"
Select "Repeat" "every" "year"
See this screen capture...
A note about my example...I'm happy to say that my dad "Marty" is 89 years old today! (though I won't save it to the DPC Calendar). All good news today is in honor of him :)

I've been thinking perhaps the thing to do to "integrate" it with DPC is to post the calendar to a thread at the beginning of the month. It would be cool though to see if we can write an addon, perhaps with greasemonkey, to "automate" a birthday post (if Langdon would allow that).
So far, 13 people have signed up. So interest may be less than I thought. (Or it may be this thread hasn't been widely viewed yet.) FYI, here's what the calendar looks like so far for this month:

Judi, if you PM me your birthday, I'll add it for you. I can do a few that way for special cases, but for the most part, it's got to be on individuals.

Here are November birthdays. As promised, I'll post an image of the calendar every month, for those who want to keep track but not join the Yahoo group.

Here's a preliminary look at the December calender. Anyone wanting to add themselves, there's still time... I will put the final one up here the end of November.
