Just thought I'd share. I'm getting better with each one I do, I love it.

Here is some critique...
cute and a decent shot - no 'posing' going on, or so it looks. crop a tad on the left- the dark line where the wall ends is distracting. nice tight framing but if she wants and 8x10 or a wallet things will get cropped/cut and not in a good way.
I assume the color shift is intentional? Can't say I'm a fan of it. She's a skinny girl so a full frontal shot is OK, but will make most folks look heavier than reality. And you've cropped into her wrists on the bottom.
Background sucks. Can't say it any other way - that sidewalk (white stripe) in the BG is terrible. The pose is adorable - I like it. But you have a pattern here of her looking directly square into the camera - try some 3/4 angles, get higher or lower.
Again, the BG sucks. Why is there a road there? Odd cropping. Seems very much like some snapshot - why is the flag cut off on the bottom? She's too far to one side of the image - trying to fit the flag pole end i suppose, but it's not working.
Again, BG issues. The top of the image shows a road? in the background. Get higher and shoot down more. You're still being a bit too straight on and square to teh subject. She looks posed - but yet uncomfortable somehow.
In all of these her head is exactly the same. Some kids are just that way, I know, but try and mix it up some.
The lighting is flat in every image - perhaps it was an overcast day? Get the flash off the camera and get some shadows/modeling going on!

Thank you for taking the time to critique my work. I am still growing and learning with each one I do. Someday I'll get it down I think. The area she wanted to pictures was small park in the middle of a lot of roads. At least she's glad with the results, I tried pinpointing what bugged me about the shots and it was the background. Thanks for the help.

It's amazing what a trained eye can see (mine has a long way to go)
I took a week long PPA class on senior portraiture and the instructor asked us to bring in our work for his critique. Wow. He could nail the lens used (focal length) and aperture used on 95% of every shot. He pointed out things that I had never even remotely considered.
I've attended many PPA seminars by top senior photographers and I'm getting there - bit by bit. This year I've finally hit a good stride and can't get the to quit coming. Really. I've tried! I've got one coming tuesday - my studio is in the middle of being drywalled so we might get to use the window, but everything else will have to be outside...it's gonna be 25 to 30 degrees with a 40% chance of snow. And she has to cut school for this - mom says it'a OK. (it's just too dark at 3:30 to do much here now). What tops if off is she's a friggin model - a working, getting paid model. And why me? I mean, c'mon, she's got access to better photogs that me I would think (and hope!). But she loves my work. I am hearing that a lot lately. I try hard not to repeat myself - each kid is unique and deserves unique pics, or as unique as I can give them. That pays off as I don't get too many "blah" kids. My feeling is that senior portraits is a collaboration - me and them. I can only bring so much to the image - they have to bring the rest. And it can be really fun when they do.
My last 5 challenge entries were all senior pics. I can't say any two are remotely identical.
And not many can say they'll do this - put a senior, in a prom gown in a pig sty, with a pig- and if you look closely you'll see she's smiling.
Yeah, it's not all art but it can be lots of fun! (and it's her pig so that made it easier)
