Can anyone show me photos here that used "only" this filter, which is a screw on? I want to see the variations you can do with this filter.

I am undecided between this and a Cokin so I can use it for other things other than the whole scene being darkened like just darkening the sky, but I don't want to spend a lot of money on it because I won't be using it very often.

I will be using a 52mm, but I don't think it matters. I just want to see the different shots you can make with it and I can't find a lot online.

Thanks from Agnes

Agnes,

with a screw-on neutral density filter, you are doing only 1 thing. that is reducing the amount of light hitting your sensor by 3-stops. Same as if you changed the aperture 3-stops, or decreases shutter time. This is not to say that this isn't useful. If you want to lengthen the exposure time so you can blur motion (of a waterfall for instance), this filter is the one to use. Sometimes, it is impossible to limit the amount of light enough without one.

To darken just the sky, you would need a graduated neutral density filter. This has the darkening effect on one-half of the filter.

some advantages of the Cokin system: buying adapters to fit all your lenses is much cheaper than buying screw-on filters for all of them. You can stack more of the cokins together before you start to vignette. You can slide the graduated ND filter and also rotate easily (very helpful for aligning the transition between the sky and foreground, for instance).
