My wife brought home a cleaning solution called "BEST Solution". It's used for cleaning eyeglasses and lewelery. It also has anti-fogging properties. The salesman told her it was safe for camera lenses, but I just bought my camera, and don't want to ruin it.
Has anyone used this type of product and would you recommend for or against it?
Thanx!

Don't use this on camera lenses. If it has anti-fogging properties, it is leaving something behind on the glass, something you never want to do. Always use a solution & wipes specifically intended for lens cleaning, and remove as much loose dust as possible with a blower brush prior to cleaning to avoid scratching. Keep your wipes in a sealed bag to avoid contaminating them with dust.

And if your lens (of UV filter protecting your lens) is multi-coated, be sure to use a solution designed specifically for multi-coated optics, or you'll be left with unpleasant, colorful streaks at a minimum, and at the worst, you'll remove some of the coating. The fine folks over at 2Filter sell Formula MC as well as Eclipse, the latter which is basically pure methanol and very frequently used for cleaning imaging sensors on DSLRs. |

Just recently started using a small pen type item with a circular patch of leather afixed to the end. It is specifically made for high quality optics. Found it at a "birders" store along with some very expensive binoculars. Was recommended for cleaning the lenses of the bino's. Works great. Have used it on my 4300 and the UV protector filters on my other Nikkor glass.

I have one of those too. It's called a LensPen and does work for quick touch-ups without breaking out the cleaning solution. |

Thanx for all the help. I was leery about using the stuff to begin with.
I had the same thought on the anti fog--in order for it to work there has to be some residue.
I'm looking into a Lenspen.
Thanx again for the help,
Burgy. |
