I was editing a few pictures last night and when I went back this morning to continue working on them I received a message telling me that the file(s) are offline or missing. Does anyone know what I've done? I might mention that I'm new to Lightroom. Thank you so much.

Your drive where they reside is not on or you've moved the images outside LR or you deleted it.

For the last possibility, check the recycle bin. For the other two, check that all drives are turned on and search your computer for the file that is missing. You can tell LR the new location.
