PS I agree it's not a problem to workaround this issue at all.
My reasons for wanting it fixed, when I was still under the impression that it was my copy of the lens at fault, was that I had paid, for my second-hand copy, about 80% of the price of a new lens. My thinking was simply that, if I wanted to sell it in the future, I might not have been able to achieve the same price, because I would feel duty bound to mention the problem.
Now I know it's not a problem, or at least, it's a problem with the lens as a whole and not my copy, that issue is no longer relevant.
I'm left feeling bloody pissed off with the Canon Refurb Centre as this has wasted a lot of time and effort (and money in terms of mileage, as the shop is not local to us).
Anyway, thanks everyone for helping, much appreciated.
