I find myself unsure and in need of some advice - I'm thinking about getting a P&S camera, but can't seem to reach a decision, or even decide if it's worth it for me.
There are days when I just don't want to carry a DSLR, lens, and bag with me, like when I go hiking, attend a party, or visit the city. Yet I cringe at the idea of not having a camera, because I know that I'll inevitably see something I want to take a picture of - I may even want to go out and shoot, just with a minimum of hassle.
A few months ago I sold my Canon G9 because I simply didn't like it's performance well enough. The shutter lag killed me, and half the ISO range was unusable. However, I was trying to substitute it for a DSLR in situations I probably shouldn't have.
If I get a P&S, it must have the following features: M mode, IS, decent zoom (above 4x), SD card. I'd prefer to stick with Canon, since I'm most familiar with them. I'd like to stick to a price range around $150, and not higher than $200.
Right now, I'm looking at the Canon Powershot SX110 or SX100. They both offer excellent zoom range and IS, but reviews state they suffer from the usual problems; very slow flash re-charge, noise at nearly all ISOs, lag. I've also considered the Powershot A2000, which has somewhat less zoom range.
I've even thought about the Powershot A1000, which goes down to 4x zoom, and the Powershot A590, which my girlfriend has. But both seem rather limited to me.
In the end, I keep returning to the idea of finding a used/refurbished SX100 (I'm not sure that the SX110 really improves over any of the problem areas), but then I wonder if I'll spend the money and be disappointed with it.
I welcome any insight or input. Tell me to go for it. Talk me out of it. Or offer up a used SX100 ;-)
