Wireless:

Canon Infared. Line of sight: ST-E2

Cheaper Pocket Wizard: Alien Bees

Pocket Wizard: Pocket Wizard

With the Alien Bees or Pocket Wizard you will need a transmitter and receiver. With the ST-E2 just a battery to go in it.

I'll vouch for the Alien Wizards...they aren't exactly cheap, but $130 USD for a Tx and an Rx isn't too bad a hit. The PWs will run you $300+ for the set. There is a cheaper alternative, known as "EBay Triggers", that are about $30 for the set. As usual, (first in!), check out the Strobist blog for great advice in this arena.

the strobist thing is great, kinda overwhelming though. i am thinking about getting some sort of wireless from B&H, but im aiming for cheapness at this point. like under $50. you may want to invest more then that to get bettter quality

at the moment i dont mind saving up a bit to get the better product, saying that i want it all now :DD

anyone recomend and good UK supplyers online? most the stuff on ebay comes from hong kong and takes ages to get lost in the post :) (as well as most ebay stuff being rubbish)

You could use an off-camera shoe cord like the Canon OC-E3. However, they're expensive and too short to be useful in a studio. They're designed to be used with off-camera flash brackets.

Unfortunately, Canon doesn't supply a PC sync connector with their Speedlites.

The 580EXII has a built in PC sync connector I use it with my Cybersyncs from AB to fire mine all the time. The battery powered cybersyncs even come with the required cord to hook them to the 580EXII.

These two pc cords cost $35 and work pretty well.. they plug into eachother.. 20' of workspace.. cheap and reliable alternative to pocket wizards..

The e-bay triggers work just fine to start out with. I've used them indoors and outdoors under a number of conditions In this one the flash was actually in my coat sleeve as was the trigger, so it's not like it has to be seen. I've put them behind people, and they worked great. Of course, every once and a while, they'll glitch and I just turn it off and back on. Meh, show me something that never glitches ; ). Order yourself a couple of pairs and have a spare on hand (because it's always good to have a spare).

all of the above are the way to go, the best being wirelss, me i couldnt really afford wireless at the moment so i looked in to a cord. i picked up two pc cords reaching about 20ft long from amazon for under 40$USD and it seems to do the trick and would well untill i can afford to go wireless.

I can vouch for the ST-E2. I couldn't do without it. I've fired up to 10 flashes with it without a hitch.

Kudos to Canon for that!
