Ah, yes. That as well. Unless you don't mind your website being intermittently up.

Forgetting the days of dial-up already... and man, am I glad of that.

Hi-
Regarding the Mac website--even if you have constant Internet connection, you must also have a static IP address. If your IP address changes every time you restart, your website will not be accessible. (It is a really cool thing though-- I have a Mac, but not a static IP). I have a website using Homepage with my .Mac account. It's pricey: $100 a year, but you get email, webpage, 15mb of idisk storage accessible from anywhere, and tons of extras. Plus it's super easy to use, for those of us who are not yet comfortable with webpage design and construction. Melking- great website by the way!

I've been using verve hosting for a couple of years now and actually became a reseller for them so that everyone else whose site I made or maintain could use them, too. They have reasonable prices and the best tech support I have witnessed anywhere, for anything.

If you want good customer service, check out a site called Cornerhost htp://www.cornerhost.com

It is a bit on the pricey side, but really isn't to expensive, and everytime I've had a question or I fouled something up it's been fixed within a few hours of my foul up.

Or (in reply to dynamic ip comment) there are many services which track and update for you, some of them free ( //www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns/ ).

After the free period they are hoping your site will be so embedded in their service you'll stick with them, as I probably would. They have paid plans starting at about US $6/month; I think the level of service in this promotion would be about $30/month (i.e. it's a small business package).

I signed up for the 1and1.com offer.

No credit card is needed like you say but if you buy the domain name for $5.99 a year a credit card is needed.

They have computer computer centers located across the US and they list a URL for UK users.

I don't think a US number is required?
Did you read that someplace in their agreement?

One thing I like about 1and1.com is you can monitor all expenses and set a cost limit. If you do not want to exceed a certain dollar amount you can list that amount and it will notify you if you near that cost.

If you've got a mac with OS X, it's a lot easier to just use your own computer as a server, since Apache is built in. Just enable "web sharing" in preferences and put website files in library/webserver/documents, and your hard drive is your space limitation.

I wouldn't recommend this for security reasons - unless you are either;

a) comfortable putting the contents of your PC/MAC permanently on the web
b) can run a separate PC/MAC as a web server

If you are considering this, get a multi-port router and connect your server machine to the DMZ (?) port. You can keep your web space separate from everything else this way.

I'm fairly certain that security is not much of a concern with that, actually; the only publicly availably folder is the webserver/documents folder. For someone to get access to the entire system, FTP sharing would also have to be enabled and the password would have to be something like "password". Here's Apple's page on the web sharing capabilities of OS X:

//www.apple.com/macosx/features/websharing/

The Unix/OS X/Apache combination results in a server which is notoriously hard to hack except in cases of gross user error - which is fortunate, as the vast majority of webservers run either a Unix derivative, Apache, or a combination.

Anyway, she doesn't have a Mac, so it doesn't matter all that much.
