It works fine, but compared to current models quite outdated. Still happy with it.

Outdated it is, but I'm still getting good shots from mine. I chose to spend money on good lenses this year, not the camera. Used ones can be picked up for less than a decent compact, so if you're asking because you're looking to get into DSLRs for a low cost, then I'd say get one. Or the D70s; the same camera but with a pc socket, I believe?
My objective for next year is the D300, but I'll be keeping the D70 as a second body. |

prolly still a really good cam, but not a big step up from your d50. same resolution, same features, better body tho.
if you're looking for an upgrade from your d50 you might wanna look into the new d90 or d300.

Like Mephisto says, the d70 is a good camera, but it's only a small step from your d50. Ask yourself why you're going to upgrade. Then choose whether the d70 is fullfills your needs or whether you want to save a little longer to make a larger step.

many people keep this body around for the 1/500 flash sync. it's a solid body, noisy at high iso, and notorious for underexposing. i'll eventually upgrade, but for now it's a very capable body that allows me to focus on glass acquisition. and it will probably be converted for IR in the future.. |

It's a great camera, but as people have mentioned- its very similar to your D50. If you can live without the DOF preview, 2 control dials and a few other features, staying with your D50 or considering the D90 is probably your best bet. I believe the D50 is actually slightly better at high ISOs than the D70 as well? |

Yeah.....it's funny how much grief I get for the ol' brick and how I'm constantly told to upgrade to a "better" piece.
The graphics shop just stopped by here with the first panel....I've got to run it to Philadelphia tomorrow for a design client.
What panel, you ask?
The 40"X72" 1st of three that make up the 6'x11' enlargement of this image from my D70s:[thumb]734976[/thumb]
It's really clean.......even I'm surprised by how nice it looks.
This camera constantly surprises me by the quality of its images.
Yeah, go ahead and get whatever, and sure, I'd love to have a D700, but if this one dies and I don't have a lot of money, I'm getting a refurb! LOL!!!

Well thanks for the info ....... I was looking at getting a new camera and found a bunch of d70,s for cheap........I don't have alot of money and I couldn't get a loan to buy a candy bar......I was thinking of getting a used d200 body but then I saw d70s with flashes and lens and stuff for less......... |

A d50 was my first dslr, and compared to the d70(s), I wouldn't bother switching. I recently picked up a d200 as a primary for weddings, but i still use my d50 quite a bit, and kept it as a back up.
The d90 is really appealing, awesome noise performance, great resolution for the price, and the 720P video capability could keep me entertained for a long time. |
