This is a slightly old but untold story, it honestly has skipped my mind before now but I think it needs to be told.

Around the middle of Oct 2008 I was in Gainesville, FL. with my mother, at the University of Florida hospital, she was meeting with a doctor there. While waiting for my brother to pick us up I decided to take some shots of the Gator figures the hospital had out front.

I am minding my own business not bothering anyone, I see a security guard and he glances at me and walks past.

A few seconds later he walked up to me!

He asked me politely to make sure I did not take any photos of the people visiting the hospital for medical confidentiality! The nerve of him! I assured him that I was being careful not to take pictures of anyone. He smiled and wished me a good day and left.

Can you believe it, he actually talked to me, and in a polite and professional matter. He didn't take my camera or shoot me or anything.

What is the world coming too? I could have been an evil terrorist, or a republican, or something!

And if I got away with such actions, who else is getting away with them? It has been bothering me more than I realized, and I may have to give up going outside because of it.

Thank you all for listening, sadly in all the confusion I didn't get his name nor his picture.

LOL@tazer

i find that if you dont come off confrontational all goes well, but if you stiffen up and your eyes narrow when theyre talking to you, all goes bad. Just relax

I think it was nice of the guard to ask it the way he did if you were taking pictures of people for confedentiality purposes <-- that alone makes me think a) he wanted to make sure you werent and b) wanted to make sure you understood why (..yea) wish more people did that

I'm pretty sure gator figures are covered under HIPAA, hence his concern.

couple years ago my brother came to visit me not long after I had moved to the Seattle area--we went down to the nearby ferry landing for lunch, and then went out on the pier taking photos of the ferry, etc. A bicycle officer pedalled out to us, and asked us in a friendly way about what we were shooting. I explained we were both from the SW, etc, and that I had moved recently, my brother was visiting. He never asked to see our images, never asked us to stop, and was very helpful--told us exactly where and how to get some walk-on tickets for a ferry ride, and wished us a nice day.

There had been threats to ferries, so I appreciated his caution, understood his concern, and was happy to speak with him. Had I pitched an attitude, it would have been different. And there was no need.

Man, you let them get away with being polite and, next thing you know, they're going to start wanting to be courteous and helpful too -- thanks for greasing the slippery slope ... ;-)

Someone has called me an @$$#O!3 for stopping a photographer.

All this reminds me of a story from a few years back. While visiting a decommissioned military island near where I live to take pictures of elderly sailing vessels of the WWII, Korean, Viet Nam era, and other stuff tied up in the vicinity, I strayed into the view of a guy in a little hut.

Out he came to say "no pictures! no pictures!"

to make a long story very short, we talked for a minute or two and he gave me "no more than 10 minutes now", and the island and everyone on it has ever since been safe from my photography.

So many people step past the bamboo railings and step all over the grass just to get a certain picture, mostly groups. People sometimes jump the fence to take a picture with the Buddha. Photographers love climbing the trees. Some of those trees are over 100 years old and can't take too much abuse. People don't move their tripods when people want to walk around as the paths are small. Smokers in the garden.

Usually it's other people that let's us know about these problems so we have no choice but to talk to the people that is inconsiderate.

I just wished that more people use the "Leave it as you found it" rule :( Others would like to enjoy the garden too.

I hear that taking photos of people visiting hospitals to to ruin their medical confidentiality is big business these days.

Your answer, faidoi just made me heartsick. The Japanese Tea Garden is such an incredibly beautiful garden, lovingly tended and with camera angles there for the taking, from the correct side of the fence. Let alone risking damage to those delicate trees by climbing them!

Well, let 'em call you names if you must, but thank you for trying to keep the place intact.

Wow, Amateur photographers taking pictures of total strangers for the purpose of ruining their medical confidentiality ? Where's it all gonna stop ? Where's Joe the plumber when you need him ? Daffy Duck will know how to handle this. :)

I was in the cathedral in Mainz, Germany. I broke out the ol' tripod and next thing I know a gentelman approached and told me tripod photography was not allowed in the church. I speak ok German and explained to him that I had been stationed here back in the mid 80's. We chatted for a few minutes and he told me, ok, but be quick, and if anyone askes me I told you not to. That was pretty cool.

Then recently at the Stratussphere in Las Vegas my wife and I were going to take some self made wedding photos on the observation deck. Security stopped us before we went up and told us no tripods. I politely asked for a supervisor and soon enough one came. He was very polite in explaining that it was a liability issue of people tripping over the tripod. We were guests at the hotel and asked if we could take the photos at the pool...no problem there. I guess people don't trip over tripods at the pool.

I can understand the Stratosphere̢۪s position, it is a fantastic view, but allow 1, you must allow 100 in a relatively small area. A easy fix, just ask another photographer, last time up there I was glad to help on 5 separate occasions.

Tog, perhaps you just don't fit the best ethnic profiles for triggering proper harassment.

He certainly could have been more helpful. Did you suggest he should pose for you?
