The new job, the new house, a conference out of town, my grandmother's health problems and death, and lack of inspiration for challenge themes have conspired to keep me away from DPC.

I'm in the Free Study, though, and I'm still taking photos. :) I see TS continues to hum along!

I got a 7 vote, and my score went down.....how cool is that for someone who breaks out the champagne when he gets a 6?

Good job, Jeb!
11/06/2008 02:27:30 PM · #338
Congrats, Jeb! That's an amazing score.

My own good photographic news is that I placed second in this month's Trusted Reviews contest with what's currently my second-best DPC scoring shot of the staircase, netting me the biggest prize package yet: a point and shoot digicam, a 2GB memory card, and a card reader. :)

Thanks for your thoughts about my grandmother. Grandma Nora was 91 and lived independently, even still driving until she got sick a couple of months ago. A real fighter, Grandma beat breast cancer - twice. And in this era of video games, she was a Life Master bridge player.

Grandma and Grandpa lived a full life, living in Laos, Iran, Haiti and Korea for Grandpa's job with the State Dept. No, he wasn't a spy - he helped countries with their customs services. Grandma worked wherever they went, as a teacher, a clerk, or whatever she could find to stay busy. They loved traveling the world and cruising, passions I share. They were married 64 years before Grandpa died in 2000.

They were classy, like 1950s movies classy: they had cocktails every night, dressed up for dinner, and patronized the ballet, opera, and theater. They were also both very smart, and I fondly remember several heated debates.

After 30+ years in Hollywood, Florida, Grandma moved to Seattle soon after Grandpa died, to be near my mom and stepdad. By coincidence, I was going out there anyway for a conference after she'd been sick for several weeks, so I went early to help my mom out. I'm very glad I took the nonstop, because I was able to spend a couple of hours with her, giving her a card from my daughters that made her smile. While my mom and I were chatting, she had a stroke, and died a few hours later.

She's survived by 2 siblings (including her older brother!), 3 kids, 5 grandkids, and 7 great-grandkids, the oldest of whom is 11. We're very lucky that she got to know all of them.

Probably more than you wanted to know, but what the heck. :)

I wanted to do the mirrors challenge really badly, but I was in camera transition that made shooting a little difficult. I have some ideas floating around for either Red or Blue and also for Periodic Table.

My Abandoned shot is around a 5.4, not too shabby.

Jeffrey, what a wonderful account of a wonderful woman! You are indeed fortunate to have had her in your life - as are the rest of your family members. Remember her with fondness and grace. Given what you've said here, that should be easy to do. I'm sorry for your loss, but I also offer my respect for a life well and fully lived.

You've done her proud, sir - and you did the right thing. Thanks for that and condolences.

Jeffrey, we should all take a page from her book. She knew how to live and did it to the fullest.

Thanks for pointing that out! I deleted the original a long time ago. Instead of replacing it, I copied my description above into my comments.
