re: delivery date...

This LINK is a recent video of a Canon rep at the NY trade show demonstrating the camera and in it he says that the 5D/II is scheduled to ship to dealers in late November and will probably hit the shelves in early December, just fyi.

Looking to offload the 20D? :P I'm in the market for something a tad better than my 300D (which is still broken!) but I don't really need anything as new and snazzy as all the expensive stuff coming out at the moment!

Oo I'm rubbish and out of touch, I'll have to research before I go offering kazillions of monies :P

I accept bazillions, too.

BTW, I contacted Amazon support to try and get some info. I emailed two simple questions but received a horribly canned near-full-page response that didn't address either. That email was a waste of electrons, but I didn't really expect more. And hey, they responded within 5 hours, and that's all that counts, right?

One more update, I clicked the "this response did not answer my question" link in the response email and was able to have them call me. Over the phone I got much more interesting information. I found out that I was #399 on the pre-order list... I wonder how many units Amazon will receive - I may want to look into a small local shop backup plan. =/

Oh I've been thinking about that... I think there's a pretty significant difference between the two. If I was going to plunk down enough coins for a 5d II, I think it would be best to complement it with the best bit of glass possible for its use.

I'm looking very closely at the inconvenience of having to use a larger filter. I'm still 70-30 for the 16-35 though...

im pretty sure they compared them both on luminous landscape a while back. If i remember rightly, the 17-40 was sharper at middle distances and the 'long' end, but not at the wider end where the 16-35 took the crown.

I went for the 17-40 L cos i got a great deal and its truly a brilliant lens.

Ya, just be armed with the information and make your own decision. Luminous Landscape 16-35 vs. 17-40.

I thought that review was for the 16-35 I. I've heard that the 16-35 II is better.

The 5D MKII is appearantly coming to several dealers here in Norway on November 10th. I hope it holds true. I simply can't wait to get my fingers on it!! :) Only 6 days to go...

But there is an American dealer that claims to have it in stock... Somehow I doubt it though!

My local Kits Camera store told me ( and they were told by their Canon rep) that it will be about 6 months before the camera will get to the stores because Canon first ships out to the people who pre-ordered it and they are BADLY back-ordered as it is already. Apparently, the demand for that camera has been HUGE.

Couple reports of the Netherlands on Nov 8th.

Also a couple for Seattle on Nov 21st.

Perhaps the most substantial of info to date, Amazon Japan now shows an availability date of Nov 28th.

Also, this page seems to be a reliable, condensed source of info regarding the 5DMkII release.

IMO the 16-35 is overpriced and the 17-40 is one tough lens, Ill find the story I wrote but long story short, min fell in a river, canon said its toast and I pulled it apart, cleaned it and put back together and it still kicks ass :) oo btw here's my "proof of disassembly" lol

That's AWESOME! :) Did you need a special spanner to open the top? I want to take apart my 24-105 lens that fell in the Ocean and check it out, but I don't know how to open the top. Seems I need some special tool for it.

Just to keep you up to date:

The 5dII has hit the streets in Bejing. Looks like it's officially scheduled for release in Japan on the 29th. There's no official date in the US, but we're hoping for the 29th as well.

I'll be in Malaysia next week and will keep an eye out for it.

FYI - Canon rep Chuck Westfall says Canon USA will be shipping to retails tomorrow (11-25). Below is a post from DPReview forum regarding possible retailer availability dates.

Originally posted by DPReview post:

Folks:

For those of you who read the Chuck Westfall announcement that 5D IIs would ship from Canon tomorrow (11/25), there are some "guidelines" you might want to take into account. FYI I too am awaiting for a 5D II. But most recently, similar things happened when I took delivery of my Powershot G10.

- FYI Canon shipped the G10 to retailers on 09/30 (also a Tuesday). My retailer told me on that day that HIS order status on Canon's site showed "SHIPPED", along with a Fedex tracking number. He told me that Canon always ships Fedex Standard Overnight.

- Despite that, his order -- labeled "Standard Overnight" -- did not arrive until THURSDAY, October 1.

- IF I were to derive any similarities between G10's ship two months ago and the arrival of the 5D II, it would indicate that the 5D II won't arrive at retailers until FRIDAY (due to Thanksgiving).

- IF that IS the case, then you should plan accordingly. If you're picking up from a retail store, you should check with them around noon, both on Wednesday AND Friday. FYI I plan to visit my retailer. If it's shipping from an e-tailer, you might want to take inventory checking into account, as well as ship prep and shipping speed you selected.

FYI I'll be popping into my retailer tomorrow, to find out his current ship status from Canon. TO ME, nothing's "official" until my retailer shows his order is "SHIPPED".
Hope this helps some of you!

ETA: I have not heard anything from Amazon, as yet...
