I want a 50D...But I don't need one.

How long do you guys think it will take to mark down the price of the 50D after the initial surge in demand subsides? Weeks (I would be in heaven)? Months (It would seem reasonable)? Years (Really!?!?)?

When's the 60D due out? There's your answer. Certainly not before the Holiday season.

You're probably right, I don't think my patience will hold.

Just hold on. Nikon has something cooking for November. Canon always tries to catch up when Nikon innovates.
LOL ;p I don't normally do the canon/nikon thing but one of our elder members hit me with it today. LOL :p

Good point. Nikon will announce a new camera, and in the 6 months it takes them to trickle a few out to the store shelves you can probably get your hands on a used 50D for a decent price.

I read at dpreview that the price is already falling, I think it was $1335 or so at Amazon. I'm close to changing my mind for the 3rd time and purchasing the 50D instead of the 5D/2...

Now $1,349.94 and in-stock at Canoga Camera. I've dealt with these guys numerous times and they're excellent.

I'm wondering how much of this initial price drop is because of the DPReview rating, how much is the economy and how much is the normal price drop for a new digital camera body?

Dropping fast! Now $1,249.94 at Canoga Camera. (Click "Add to Cart" to see that price). I am still wondering just why... any ideas?

damn ... I just paid $1399 from J&R and it's supposed to be delivered tomorrow ... time to make some phone calls and see if they'll honor the $1249 that Canoga wants ... if not, I'll be sending it back and ordering from Canoga ... $150 is worth it to me!

I hope they'll honor that, but if not I can vouch for Canoga Camera, they're wonderful. Either way, you're going to love your new baby I'm sure! Win a ribbon with it, why don't ya! heh heh

if they won't honor the Canoga price I'll be refusing delivery and ordering from Canoga ... hope I don't have to wait again, but with the economy and all I'll deal with another wait to save the money ... I'm sure I'll need compact flash cards and another hard drive anyway!

$1199 now at B&H. Wow.

$1199 at Adorama too

The 40D is $874 on B&H.
So, why pay $325 more for a hardware that doesn't deliver as much compared with its antecessor? On the contrary, in image quality the 40D beats the 50D badly...

If you are getting a pull for the 50D you might as well wait for the new 5D ;-)

I believe one of the side-by-side comparisons showed that the 50D may have stretched it a bit by trying to pack 15+ MP on an APS-C sensor. There's a thread around here somewhere with a link.

No, it doesn't. Saying that the 40D "beats the 50D badly" is an exaggeration. The 50D appears to have reached the limit of mega-pixels vs. quality. It's not the huge jump in performance that many were hoping for. There's still noise at higher ISOs, and it's ultra-high ISO 12,800 is pretty much useless except in emergencies.

But it is by no means an inferior model, and actually has some improvements that surpass the 40D (otherwise, why would anybody bother buying it?)

It looks as if the 50D price decline may have bottomed out because the price at B&H has actually gone up by about ten dollars within the last day or so. Their price for the body only is $1229.95... it's still available at CanogaCamera for $1169.94 so about $60 cheaper (however B&H still has free shipping).

I ordered mine today, looking for Big Brown on Friday!

I had paid $1399 for mine and hadn't taken delivery ... the price dropped TWICE before I got it ... called J&R and was given the new price with no hassles ... I'm quite satisfied with their service ... glad I didn't have to refuse delivery and then re-order it at the reduced price!!

Yeah I remember all of that rigamarole! Good on J&R for treating you so well, it reflects well on them.

So... do you love the 50D? I'm getting antsy about receiving mine.
