THAT is a low score, although it is above my goal of 4.77 (my tepid-scoring last attempt at Street Photography), so I am not allowing myself to whine (wine - yes; whine - no). I clearly have not yet figured out how to succeed at this type of photography (which is WAY out of my comfort zone). I may have improved a smidgen. Maybe next time I will actually manage a respectable score! |

Don't get upset...it's a standard procedure and a form note that we all get when asked for proof. I've had a couple of these and both have been fine and validated. Obviously, your score isn't suffering for it! :) Just relax and take it as a compliment that viewers have figured that you couldn't have done what you've done without cheating! :) |
No, not upset. I am just surprised thats all. Just curious if someone asked for validation or site council themselves want to know. I know I will never find out.

I keep devolving. My first Street entry is at least a point above this one (from the last time I looked about a day and a half ago) and is approaching my second Street score. But I shall not complain. It is in the neighborhood, perhaps a tad south, of my average. Won't know for sure 'til the fat lady sings, though, since I don't think I shall ever turn scores on again. (More to do with Motion Blur than Street, but I can live without seeing either of them at this point.) |

Aw well ... at about 40 votes I was so excited .. I was in the 6.4 range ... knew it wouldn't last but it was so nice... and then it started it's tumble.. down and down it went.. but that's ok.. I am not complaining at all ....I got 7 comments over the course of the next few days.. thank you people - and I like my entry.. it's a tad below my average but that is to be expected as street photography is not someting I am comfortable with and haven't developed a good eye for.. but I am enjoying it so much!

I don't know that it's "you" persay in terms of needing to "improve". I don't know which shot is yours, of course, but perhaps, your street shot is a perfectly wonderful street shot and it's simply not DPCer's "cup of tea"??? There is a certain "look" and style that DPC voters do tend to go more towards. Personally, I haven't mastered that in my own shots either. (NOT "sour grapes" here...just stating what I've noticed)
It seems that there are a number of professional photographers as members of DPC and even THEY have not been able to get the higher scores or ribbon. Yet, they are making livings out of their photography so, it's a matter of being able to capture a whole wide range of tastes and interests to get that upper score. Again, your SP shot may SOAR in other sites where tastes are slightly different. Don't beat up on yourself! And, certainly, we all want to learn and better our photography but, better your photography according to YOU and what YOU envision...rather than tailoring your style to ANY particular site/group. Perhaps, you can try entering your shot into another photo site that has more aim towards SP and see how it does there too? If that works out better, then you know that it's simply not DPC's tastes.
Keep your chin up and your camera snapping. In spite of lower scores (I think we're all experiencing that lately for one reason or another), I've got some great shots that I haven't entered in here that are doing well elsewhere.
Hang in there!

Deb, you have the same problem we all have at times. When you are new and fresh, keen and DPC stupid, the first challenge in a subject is often quite spontaneous and scores okay. As you DPC mature and start to think on improving a past score, you actually take a backward step. They say we get wiser as we get older, on DPC we become dumber and revert to infancy! And, our score start to reflect our new mental age:))
eta: score 5.53

LOL! An excellent theory! But at the time I entered Street Photography I, I'd already been participating in challenges for over two years. You really think that by now I'd either a) have learned what it takes to do well, b) have improved somewhat, or c) packed it in. Option "c" has serious pull some days, I tell ya.... |

Ah yes, but you have been lulled into that false sense of security, Deb! The key word is in your answer...'think'...can be a major pitfall. I've been in challenges for, let me 'think', my fifth year and my scores go down further as my cameras get better:) I guess as equipment improves, imagination becomes retarded! Or perhaps it is Senior Moments, as I am getting into figures agewise that have long passed the Canon range and fast approaching the Nikons!!
Help!! :) |

Not to worry; I am not taking this too seriously. I am very good at some types of photography and even confident about them, whether or not they score well. SP just doesn't happen to fall into my comfort zone. I still have much to learn and I'm fine with that. Life would be really boring if I knew everything!
And to keep on topic ... still looking enviously up at the 5.0 just out of my reach ;-) |

First ever attempt at street photography so I guess I should be quite content with these scores at this stage.

I'm just laughing at myself here, trying to console you when your portfolio is just chalk full of fabulous photos and a couple of ribbons! :)
I think that you're right....not every style of photography is going to be in our "comfort zones" as you've said. Personally, I am always worried that someone is going to come up to me and slug me for taking a photo of them, without permission. Speaking of which...I have a silly question (of course, NOW that I've already entered the challenge with a shot! *grin*) Isn't it illegal to take shots of people, without their permission to post in challenges like this? I'm wondering if those that I took shots of were to ever see their faces on the net, couldn't we be sued? Anyone know?

Not that I particularly care, but who's the lovely member of DPC who leaves this kind of comment (and hides his/her identity like a coward)???
Meets Challenge:2
Technical:2
Interestingness:2
Creativity:
TOTAL: 6
With people like this around, we're sure to turn away photographers in droves, including me. I sure hope this person can back up their rigorous standards with their own work. I'll be waiting with baited breath to see how wonderful a photographer mr/mrs anonymous is. |

I was trying to figure out how it adds up as I got three for 'interestingness', but had I got that for the other categories it would add up to 12.
Anyway, the tally came out to 9 so I'm good with it... : )

Guys, the person who is leaving the criteria comments is giving you feedback! It is valuable feedback. If you don't like the style, that's fine, but please don't slam someone for leaving feedback! You can see from the comment whether the person thought it met the challenge (very important feedback for this particular website's "challenges"), whether they thought it interesting, whether the technicals are good... It's all valid feedback from a viewer's perspective.
Fewer and fewer people comment these days because they fear someone will post something in one of these score threads saying "This moron left me this!" That "moron" is probably doing more than you did - how many comments did you leave, and what kind of feedback did you provide?

I cancelled my post because I realized that I made an error in thinking the challenge was over already.

I got one of those comments with the technical/ meets challenge etc stuff in & I want to say thanks. Not because it was great (I got a total of 5) but least I know what they are thinking when they are scoring me. Yes im a tad bummed out immediatly afterwards but I would rather know whats going on while people are scoring then get no comment at all.

I'm not done voting/commenting yet. I still plane on commenting on all images in this image. Just remember, I'm not giving everyone a pat on the butt saying nice job. I am commenting how I truly feel about your image and what 'I' might have done to try and improve it.
Good Luck!

I don't see the problem. Perhaps you should ask the commenter about their scoring/commenting style after the challenge instead of calling them out here. We all have our own scoring schemes this one is just more stuctured then most and lends itself to providing some constructive comments too. At least you know what he/she was thinking in giving you the above average 6
Maybe their scoring goes like this:
Meets Challenge: 0-3
Technical: 0-3
Interestingness: 0-3
Creativity: 0-1 (A Bonus point for the "Wow" factor not an slam for lack of creativity)
Total: 0-10
As Deb said, at least they're providing feedback. Would you prefer to get a 6 with a constructive comment or a 1 with none? This isn't troll behaviour.
