I did not mean to imply that, or to dismiss anyone's opinion. If I get a positive comment about something from someone who is very good at that aspect, (and Irene is very good at dramatic lighting) I may take it as a strong positive or negative indicator. My 8 year old granddaughter thinks most of the photos on DPC are boring. Also, if I get several opinions that say the same thing, there may be something to it. Two comments on my recent Affluence entry remarked about what they felt was the prominence of the tire in the photo. I take that as having more validity because two people independently made the same observation. (Though I happen to like that aspect of my photo, but that's not the point) all I am saying is one needs to make a judgement call on the feedback received and the context of everything as a whole.

As another example, lpatrick does some interesting abstract photography, however he tends to usually come in fairy low. His low scoring work is also currently on display in a gallery. I initially didn't get his shots, but his work is evolving and he does some interesting studies in shape and form, that don't require needing to know what the item is. I have acquired more of an appreciation for abstracts because of him, and I think some of my own photos reflect it.

I'm not sure that this all totally relates, but it seems to make sense to me.

It makes sense to me as well. I think that we don't necessarily know or can appreciate what is out there because IF we purely stick with DPC, we tend to only be able to see value in a certain style/look. However, there is so much MORE that is out there that is truly valuable but, will BOMB in here and THAT is pegging us into a certain narrow viewpoint, isn't it?

BTW...my 26 year old daughter, who has a degree in art and has studied photography with a really different flare, wouldn't enter her work in DPC because she feels that it's "pegged" and square pegs will never permit round holes.

JOIN TEAM SUCK!!!!!!

Seriously! We have some damn fine photogs in our League of Suck, look at the list of members on the homepage of our Palatial Palace of Suck and Peace, look around, and if you like what you see fer gawd's sake join our ranks. we're fun, friendly and supportive and don't give too much of a damn about our scores. We shoot and enter what WE want, not what necessarily wins...but you'll soon see that we have our fair share of ribboners in our ranks.

As an extra bonus, once you're officially TS members, you get a copy of my brownie recipe!

It's a win-win situation!

LOL Susan......that recipe for brownies sounds great right about now! Hope that you get well soon! A lot of people have been getting sick lately and can't shake the viruses.

Hey, did you get up to snow this morning where you are?! We had some. Had to dust off cars this morning...what a drag and that was in our protected city as I like to call it. We normally miss the horrid stuff.

But, back to task here....what would Posthumous say if all of a sudden 20 of us decided to jump into Team Suck?! LOL

Putting the score aside, a really good OOB shot usually gets some great comments and that should make it all worth while (unless you have an unhealthy attachment to your average score). It has also been worth while for me as a novice photographer to try learning to compose the type of shot that will get a high score from the average DPCer. For me that fits with the notion that it's useful to master the rules so you can break them more effectively.

LOL...what a great way of putting it!

Speaking of which....now that I've taken up far more of this thread than I should have....just entered my FS shot and will wait to see how badly it bombs now too! (This one was MY style and one that I like...so, to heck with the technicals being perfect...which btw, are NOT...so, I'll wait to see the comments on this and pound my computer screen and keyboard a bit more! *smile*)

We should have a challenge themed 'Non-DPC' and give some different styles a chance to ribbon for a change.

I think I've made my own choice for the FS, and I expect it to get creamed as well. I think part of the learning experience here is knowing the difference between a bad shot and one that simply lacks broad appeal. As we have discussed in other threads, I am feeling more encouraged lately to do what I like. However, it still stings when I have what I know is a good entry and people tell me (with their votes) that it is an average, lousy snapshot.

I am also taking the comments into account, and who the comments are from makes some difference. Not that I am dismissing anyone's opinion, but as an example, if IreneM makes a remark about my lighting, I take that more to heart than an opposite comment from a new member with a 4.8 average.

Damn... I should refrain from commenting to your entries then, Steve.. since I am at 4.8... the slightest problem is that I wouldnt know which one is yours during voting.. eheheh... J/K;-)

I appreciate all comments, and it's the best way of improving. I sometimes get initially agitated at a harsh comment, but then I stop and think that this person is taking the time to offer me some feedback that I want, even if it is not what I wanted to hear. Pawdrix left me a hard, but to the point comment on my street photography entry. It was not what I wanted to hear, but it was insightful and made me think about the concept. I now understand why it is not doing well in this challenge. I am sure he has left similar comments on some other entries in that challenge. I hope others are appreciating the effort he's made to let them know why, instead of just slapping a 2 or 3 on it and pressing onward.
