One comment said he would have cropped the main subject out entirely and used another part of the image, (that I had looked at but did not work) really do voters vote on the photographers image good or bad or what they believe??? :):):) |
I kind of thought that this site is about learning what others think of our picture (and indeed even you looked at the possibility of a different crop, but didn't think it works, so the commenter did hit something).
seems like you think people should just vote on the picture as it is (good or bad) and keep their opinion to themselves, so why is everyone always complaining about not getting enough comments? |

Unless its a shot with clear technical faults, I think voters need to look for at least 2 seconds longer to see what the composer of the shot was trying to say. Then comment.
I don't think thats too much to ask - an extra 2 seconds or more of looking to see what people have to say through THEIR eyes?

how long does it take to write a two lines comment?
to me it takes much more then two seconds.
and if someone already left a comment on your picture he probably did look at it and not just clicked to the next picture. |

OK, everyone who has a 5+ score needs to cede whining rights to someone who is entitled to whine ... like me:

I'm going back in my box where I belong, with the nice Canada Goose from last week! And perhaps a little glass of the other sort of wine to make my stay more comfy. If it sounds more like honking than whining coming from under the box it'll just be the goose asking for a sip of comfort ... anyone know if they prefer red or white? He wouldn't say (unusually coy, this goose). Might as well stock up on both for a long week :-)

I now have 5 great comments on my picture, thank you all the commenters, you rock!
I just want to point out the challenge details again, because I got a sense that people are expecting only 'street' shots, while from the details, it has to be a candid shot, doesnt need to be only on a street.. it can be in a park, on a beach, in a mall, etc. Hopefully voters will include this in their criteria and be fair to everyone who didnt just submit a 'street' shot:-)
Details: Street photography is a type of documentary photography that usually features people in candid situations in public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions, and other settings.

MY comments seem to be split... some like what I did, and some would like it changed... roughly half and half... it's a tough call... I will post both possibilities in a new thread afterwords to get everyone's opinion because I changed it back and forth like 20 times because I couldn't decide myself...

Check "USUALLY" that is not always.
Came across some interesting definitions on street photography from various sources on the internet:
"If I ask someone to pose for me, or this person notices my camera and has enough time to pose - than it's more like portrait photography, or in some way documentary photography.
I would say that street photography is like a sophisticated form of candid photography with a special message from the photographer"
"Defining street photography might do injustice to it̢۪s free, liberated and completely non-uniform nature."
"Simply put street photography includes any photograph made anywhere in public places. Some people narrow it down to urban settings and some people think there must be people present in these kinds of photos. But the bottom line is that each street photographer will find their own meaning and approach therefore whatever definition they might arrive at will work just as well."
"The purpose of street photography will again vary from one street photographer to another. Some photographers are interested in simply and honestly documenting life as they see it, at times adding their own interpretation to the scene. Some want to make artistic photographs of available street scenes and others basically enjoy taking pictures and do it purely for the pleasure of it."
So the methods of shooting street photographs vary greatly amongst different photographersâ€Â¦
And so clearly street photography has no need for any set of rules and guidelines on HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE, and better be independently created and elaborated by the photographer.
But hey.... I dont want to agonise about this ;)

I went out twice to get some shots. Once in Boulder and once in Denver. Both times not a lot of stuff going on. And both times people would see me and wait for me to take the picture. Frustrating. I guess you need more crowds so you don't stand out. With that said, my score is hovering around 6.0x. Good comments, with one making me think my monitor calibration is off.

I like the definitions that you've added here. I was in a dilema on which of my shots to enter as voters tend to like the more portrait shots of interesting faces with pretty details, fancy editing etc. or lovely scenery shots of streets or areas where people congregate, while true street photography is rough, candid, unposed for and very candid. I see a number of rather posed for shots/portraits, a number of scenery shots that aren't really candid people or shots that kind of balance between looking posed for by a single subject rather than a more candid look.
I think that the true problem lays in people being afraid to stray from DPC Styles. We all know that SP is not exactly a DPC Classic look. There's not even a Gallery Choice for it's entry.

BLAH!!! Should have gone with one of my more traditional street challenge shots! Made a bad call on this choice it seems. At least I would have been holding more true to myself on this.

Awwwww..........HUGS!!!!!!!!! :(
I know what this feels like as I'm barely holding onto a 5 and just got through a challenge with a 4 range shot and another one possibly at that verge on top of this one now, too!
I've been feeling as though perhaps, I need another hobby! LOL WINK
Edit to add: I'm Canadian too so, I'll join you in a bit of Goose! ;)

I have 11 comments and love that!! However, I have to say - I love the folks who try to tell you what you did wrong in editing the shot and couldn't be more wrong in their conclusion. In the end - it's all fun and games as at least it is a comment. |

Hmmm.. interesting definitions. Thanks. I kind of agree the interpretation of the challenge should be left to an individual.. but within certain limits. I am not posting a picture to the internet, am I? So when on DPC, I read DPC definition.:-)

I believe mine has fallen into the upper end of my comfort zone (ie around a 5.6-5.7ish) but unlike Mr Dannels, I have no favs. I do hope to get to commenting a bit this evening. I'll be looking for what you tried to show me but don't shoot me if I miss it, or find something entirely different! |

Mine is tanking completely yet I have 8 comments mostly positive. Got one comment from one of my fave photogs here that pleases me, so that compensates for the low score. |

You have rated 143 of 146 images (98%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 30 images (21%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.1399.
Takes me awhile with the commenting. Average score will go up and I spend more time with the images. I'll get more done tomorrow. |

My score keeps going down, down, down. And I actually thought I picked a DPC friendly image. That's what I get for thinking. The score is around 5.8x. |
