Interesting read at Rob Galbraith's site about Joe McNally's assignment for the December issue of National Geographic. Includes some bits on how he gets these photographs.

I want to add that the photo's in NGC (a selection out of 7500 exposures) look great. Excellent and here and there creative compositions. The print quality is good too, can't see it is a 5.9mp digital (D1x). :)

Nice work if you can get it! I especially liked this part:

Later in January, McNally was in Seattle, WA where he had Boeing's entire assembly line for the 777 airliner shut down and the factory darkened while he was trying to illustrate how the plane's fuselage is aligned with a laser. But he couldn't get Boeing's laser to show up in the photos no matter what he tried, and each grotesquely expensive passing minute seemed like an hour in the idled factory. . . A dimestore laser pointer, substituted for Boeing's industrial unit, eventually did the trick.

What an incredible story and what a terrific job Joe McNally has.

I was fascinated with every paragraph. Digital Photography has definitely made the big time!

It demonstrates how far digital has come and how powerful it can be for even the most demanding photographic magazine of them all - National Geographic.

I recommend everyone interested in photojournalism read this article.

Thanks for sharing that link!
