Ever since I upgraded to LR2, every time I turn on my scanner, LR2 starts. I can't seem to find the option to turn this off. Does anyone know the way to do that?

Thanks!

Under Edit>Preferences choose the 'Import" tab and uncheck the box for "Show import dialog when memory card is detected." I believe that should do it. I don't know that there is a way to control the behavior per device, though. Perhaps someone can prove me wrong...

That box is already unchecked. The import dialog doesn't show when I turn on the scanner. Rather, LR2 itself starts up. Very annoying and time consuming.

Depending on the scanner, if you go into device manager and then properties of the scanner, there may be a dialo for controlling the autoplay options associated with the device. Tell it there 'take no action'.

See, someone proved me wrong! I should have thought of this as well. I suspect the autoplay options are the root of your issue.

I have tried, within Control Panel - Scanners and Cameras - going into the properties of my scanner. Within that there is an "Events" tab which offers three options to occur when starting the scanner - 1) "Start this Program", which offers 3 "Photoshop" versions and 1 "Scanner" option 2) "Prompt for which program to run" and 3) "Take no action".

It would seem that this is indeed the problem area. There is no change in the behavior no matter which of the options I choose. ie: LR fires up every time I turn the scanner on. When it starts, it brings up the message "Warning! No files found to import." in a box on top of the LR window. Not only that, but now it has two instances of the warning! I noticed a very brief window that appears for an instant before the warning window that has something about a scanner, but it is just a flash...too short a duration to read.

Argggh!

Did you reboot your computer after changing the option?

Good idea, but still the same.

longshot maybe - but is the file type the scanner saves as.. by default tied to lightroom2 as the default app to view that file type?

scanners have to warm up, and maybe they save a file to the HD as a whitepoint test or something.

like i said a long shot - but came to mind...

Hmmm. Let's try an experiment. Set the scanner properties to start a different program. Does that other program start as it should when the scanner starts, or is Lightroom the only program that fires up?
Also, look at other events, and see if there is another event that might be triggering Lightroom to start.

I tried all the different options, including the 3 instances of "Photoshop", and "Epson scan" - along with the "Prompt for which program to run" and "Take no action". They all yield the same result - LR starts. Turning on the scanner is the only event that triggers LR, and it happens the instant the scanner is switched on. If the scanner is already on when I start the computer, LR doesn't start.

There is a difference in the way that LR starts up depending on whether I manually start it via the desktop shortcut or it starts automatically when the scanner is turned on. The manaul start does not show the "Warning - no photos were found to import" message. I am sure that is a clue as to what is going on, but I can't pin it down.

The scanner is set to save as jpg, and the default application for viewing jpg's is Windows Picture and Fax viewer.

hmm - perplexing...

Given your test results, it is a certainty that Adobe settings are the culprit. The importer application is seeing the scanner as a device from which it wants to import, and so it opens Lr... but Lr finds nothing to import. Of course.
It's a conundrum as to why it is seeing the scanner as that type of device. Since Lr is not open when the scanner is switched on, the culprit must be the little Adobe application that monitors for inserted devices. That's different than the Lr application itself, and it's the direction you need to look for a solution. You might think about posting in the Adobe Forums, someone there may well have a solution.

uninstall LR or don't start your scanner and the problem will never return

Joking - but LR does seem to have some strange behavior and a will to take over the computer.

I had a similar problem when I would plug my iPhone in to sync with my computer. I had to change the prefrences for the phone. But I think posting on the Adobe forums will help. And if all else fails, call Adobe.

I have a thread going in the LightRoom Forum, but so far, no real help. I shudder at the prospect of contacting Adobe directly...last time I had to do that I ended up having to make a new administrator account which I am now stuck with - no way to delete it. Now I have to go through an extra dialog in order to log on to my own personal, "private" computer.

That was a GREAT help! Although the exact solution (applies to LR1.4)was not what they said:

"Choose Start; Run, and type in msconfig. Click OK.
Choose the Startup tab.
Deselect Adobe Photo Downloader in the startup list.
Restart windows. "

There was no "Adobe Photo Downloader" in my startup list. However, I did look for any startup file(s) loaded by Lightroom and that turned out to be apdproxy.exe. Disabling that on startup stopped LR2.1 from starting up when the scanner is turned on.

Thanks everyone for the help - that is the biggest reason I'm here these days.
