I love my Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO IF for Canon...have had great luck with it.

My experience buying this lens originally started when I called Sigma directly. They advised to beware of stores selling the "old" version of this lens and they then gave me the product number. Sure enough, looking online, most were selling the old lens and not the new one. This alone might make a difference in the lens quality.

I did buy the new one, the macro II. I know it can be a fantastic lens, and I spoke at length with hotpasta before I decided to get it - he has also taken some great shots with all his Sigma lenses. I guess I just got unlucky, hopefully it will be resolved if and when they send me a new one.

I bought it from Digital Camera Warehouse in Sydney.

Thanks everyone for your comments, I appreciate the support and info. dzone 1, I have heard this, however how is it possible that so many stores DO post their no refund/credit note only sign, and seem to get away with it? From what I can tell, they still have the right to replace the item first, and if you disagree you have to go to the Fair Trading tribunal, which is a lengthy and messy procedure. All I want is a good lens, and I need it very quickly, so don't think I'm in a position to wait that long. I could be wrong, if you've had experiences otherwise I'm very eager to hear about them. I have even considered going to the local crook shops and getting a Nikon 70-200 on their 12 month interest free terms, but they charge so much more for their lenses that it really urks me to do it. This is already an extremely expensive business to be in, let alone knowing you're being ripped off in the process.

They get away with posting the no refund policy signs because no one challenges it. I had an experience a few years ago where I returned a faulty item and was referred by the shop manager to their no refund policy. I told them they can put up as many signs as they want but it is still illegal. They promptly issued a refund.

It is a similar situation to the bag inspections. Most people don't realise that they can refuse to show the contents of their bags and the store can do absolutely nothing about it. They can only ask you to leave the store and not return. The only other option they have is if they have personally witnessed you stealing an item they can then detain you until police arrive. If it is then found that you are innocent you can sue the pants off them.

probably more of a management decision--they saved the 2 cents or so that the auto over-ride would cost.
