Personally, I find a lot of the pictures lacking, well in the grand scheme of things some are quite good and follow a normal curve.
I think a lot are missing intent, but that could be me. Some have good intent but are not captured as well as could be... (though I have been generous with 6s, not many are above).
I will be commenting on 100% of the photos this time around, as it appears a lot of photographers are taking their score quite personally. I think comments are in order.
Incidentally, my own photo lacks intent but I knew that quite well before submitting the shot.

I am a happy camper. So far my PB..dunno if it will stay this way, but I definitely learnt a few editing techniques on my own (I looked at some of the past winners and read their PP descriptions and tried to mimic them in the humble GIMP.. wasnt great but I am happy ;-)

My entry took quite a number of views (130) to reach 50 votesâ€Â¦ so 6.0200 with 1 comment. Well – at least it’s so far doing better than my average vote received: seems to be getting mostly 5s with occasional 6s and 7s. |

I did not enter this challenge, but I plan on voting and commenting on every photo entered. I am being blunt and honest. You may not agree with my point of view, but it's how I feel about your image. I am spending a few minutes on each shot really trying to assess what it is you the photographer were wanting to show me. I am commenting on composition, post processing, subject matter, cropping, etc.
Good luck y'all!

Well I'll thank you for being honest with your critiques! I know that I joined this site to improve my photography skills (or at least gain some!) and the best way is through honest thoughtful comments.

I agree with your comment/assessment on mine. Really wish I hadn't looked at the shot with DPC in mind.... Thank you most kindly - really appreciate the effort! |

Now I have 3 comments.. all great. The picture apparently touched one of the commenters. It is such a gratifying feeling when the feeling you intended to share reaches across the internet and the monitors and moves someone miles apart.
Thank you commenters (I know who you are, but wouldnt disclose as yet:-) |

One comment said he would have cropped the main subject out entirely and used another part of the image, (that I had looked at but did not work) really do voters vote on the photographers image good or bad or what they believe??? :):):)

Thats a good score. About the voters, I think they rate an image based on how they interpret it, and what they would have done to improve it. So there comes the part subjective interpretation plays during voting. Others sometimes see what the photog never saw in their pics. And -usually-, if someone writes a longer than 4 words comment, they are trying to make a positive suggestion.
P.S. I am not commenting in this one yet, so dont think I am retorting:-)

If it was me, sorry if I hurt your sensitivities, but I am trying to be honest in my comments this round. I truly feel that sometimes we get to married to an image and aren't open to seeing how it may improve. Step back for a minute, look at the image as it may have been suggested to you, and see if there is anything you could have done to improve it. I am not saying that my suggestions are always on target and will improve every image, but I do try to be open to others opinions of my work and will try things suggested to me to see if betters my own photography.

Its a tough call for this challenge. Street photography can be quite emotive, and we all see things in different ways. I have had to struggle with my own ego this time round and listen to people's comments, having put up an image that I intentionally made soft, grainy and dark, and cropped it in a certain way specifically to show size and scope, and give a better feeling of the street and the scene I shot. I darkly romanticised it I guess, knowing that it would get shot down in flames but trying to go for MY artistic sense this time, not DPC voters necessarily. Its hard hearing that people don't think you can focus, or that they want you to have the subject looking directly at you (it IS supposed to be candid, is it not?), etc etc, but its definitely good to learn that there are so many different ways that we would each like to shoot or see a photo, and accept it. I need to get a bit more Zen about this ;-)
Anyway, I'm sitting on a sad 5.7, and hope that someone gets what I was trying to do.

Oh come on, Steve, you have a front page full of 6+, you are a great photographer and I'm sure you know what I mean. I have only pipped over 6 once, I certainly don't expect to get to 8 or 9, but I guess what I was trying to say was that in this particular challenge we may all be feeling a little more emotional about our shots because it IS an emotional subject. There are some fantastic shots on this challenge, people have tried really hard and succeeded in my opinion, and after a run of what seems like very low scoring and slightly boring challenges, it would be nice for us to all take a good long look at the images, and contemplate what the photographer was trying to do. Personally if I was to listen to a composer's piece of music I would not say "I would have done it this way" if it was clearly a heartfelt piece. How could I project my heart onto a piece that was written by someone else's heart? Unless its a shot with clear technical faults, I think voters need to look for at least 2 seconds longer to see what the composer of the shot was trying to say. Then comment. |

Hey, at least you got a comment! ;)
Mind you, I'm on my 3rd keyboard right now so, perhaps, having NO comments will save me having to buy another one! ;)\ |
