Ouch this hurts....
Score dropping rapidly. Started at 5700 now down to 5200

Came across some interesting definitions on street photography from various sources on the internet:

"If I ask someone to pose for me, or this person notices my camera and has enough time to pose - than it's more like portrait photography, or in some way documentary photography.
I would say that street photography is like a sophisticated form of candid photography with a special message from the photographer"

"Defining street photography might do injustice to it̢۪s free, liberated and completely non-uniform nature."

"Simply put street photography includes any photograph made anywhere in public places. Some people narrow it down to urban settings and some people think there must be people present in these kinds of photos. But the bottom line is that each street photographer will find their own meaning and approach therefore whatever definition they might arrive at will work just as well."

"The purpose of street photography will again vary from one street photographer to another. Some photographers are interested in simply and honestly documenting life as they see it, at times adding their own interpretation to the scene. Some want to make artistic photographs of available street scenes and others basically enjoy taking pictures and do it purely for the pleasure of it."

So the methods of shooting street photographs vary greatly amongst different photographersâ€Â¦

And so clearly street photography has no need for any set of rules and guidelines on HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE, and better be independently created and elaborated by the photographer.

But hey.... I dont want to agonise about this ;)

Dropped overnight into the range that (to me) says "A good effort, but seriously lacking in some way". Of course, there are no comments to explain these votes. Normal ops.

I don't have scores on, but I figure I'm in the 5.6 to 5.7 range at the moment given that my average isn't moving at all. I'm not displeased with something in the 5.6 to 5.7 range; I would consider that pretty darn good in a challenge where opinions will vary quite widely.

I will try to do some commenting later today.

I expected worse since I took and submitted the pic about 30 minutes before end of challenge.

This is by far my best start in a very long time. It's very nice to see an image I thought would do well, actually do well. With that said, I'm sure it will begin to drop like a rock.

Melethia, Jospiff....hey...we all know that in here, take a pretty picture that somewhat fits within the challenge criteria (even extremely loosely), edit it with flare and it doesn't really matter what the subject matter is...it's going to do better than those that are less technically perfect but, have a true message. ;)

We all knew coming into this challenge that Street Photography in its purer form, doesn't have much appeal in DPCland. That's why there's no Gallery Choice for it! So, those who stuck to Street Photography in it's truest form are going to be way down there score wise by comparison to someone who has a lovely shot portrait style shot of someone on a street and has edited it in DPC Look style! Even though street photography is supposed to be rough, raw and because it's a fast moving, candid style of shot, the technicals are not going to be the strived for "perfection" so, expect low scores!

The question is...are YOU happy with your shot? Do YOU like it?

I had 7 shots that I had narrowed mine down to. I chose the one that I entered because I felt that it was closer to DPC standards than the other 6 BUT, it was still a Street Photography shot that had a message. I know that the voters (save for a few) are NOT going to see that message in it. They are not seeing pretty stock shot in it and therefore will pass it by with a low score. And, that's ok. I expected this. I like it!

Chin up! And, by the way....here's my score, since we are in a score thread.

Truly disappointing score wise, but I love the SP shots that I got and I'm later, going to enter them in a photo essay in another site! They aren't going to waste! ;)

Good points, Jamie - and I gotta tell ya, the thing I like best about this challenge so far (and I haven't even had a chance to view the entries yet) is the interest it has sparked in folks like you, who may not have tried street photography before. In my eyes, that makes the whole darn shootin' match worthwhile. I do hope after the challenge you'll post your essay to your portfolio here, too, or at least give us a link to the other site.

And yes, I really do like the shot I entered, as well as about a half a dozen more I considered and will eventually get around to putting in the SCSC (street candid side challenge).

Congrats on the entry doing better than your expectations!!!! :) That always feels good! Especially, when you have a "last moment" entry. That always surprises me. Some of my best scoring shots are last moment entries! :) (The ones I spend days and a lot of energy trying to get seem to...BOMB! LOL)

Yup, I'm waiting for comments too but, I find that the early voters aren't necessarily taking a lot of time. Some of them are "speed voting" and are not really scrutinizing the shots individually. More of a "like it", "don't like it" type of thing. Those who take the time to really look at the photos and think about them more fully, come in as the week goes along. That's when we'll get some constructive comments. Well....MAYBE! *wink*

Thank you Melethia! Yes, it has sparked a really wild and unexpected interest in me now! LOL I did enter the last SP Challenge, but didn't really have the concept down at that point. I was also stupid and took my shots in a very high crime area with a p&s camera which made it a very terror filled venture. I was fearful of getting shot for having a camera while drug dealers were going about their business. I was lucky to have gotten any photos and not be SHOT myself (with a gun). This time, I went to a more interesting area and safer and it was a lot more productive! :)

Gotta see your shots too when you've put them in the side challenge!!! :)

This was my first time trying out street photography. At first I was quite shy about pointing my camera towards a group on people that were strangers. However, after a while I found myself enjoying capturing the stories that unfolded in front of me. I will do this again, it was fun and challenging at the same time.

As for scores, it is about what I predicted. I had a 7.0 with 9 votes last night. Now:

6.02. . . score
I don't like that score because I know how likely it is to sink over the days of brutal voting :(

I had one comment that was helpful the other questioned the candidness of my shot and if you could have seen how irritated my subject was with me in the other shots that person would probably take it back. At least it isnt as heated as the zoo-v-wild debate. LOL My score dropped a lot over night but I wouldn't expect much more than this.

I still haven't turned on scores (maybe Wednesday) but I'm pleased to see you guys doing well! I suspect you're all kicking my butt. Certainly, MAK is! I don't think any of you with high 5s and into the 6s should be disappointed at all. Like I said, it's a subject/method that will have very different results with different viewers in most cases. Looking forward to settling in later this evening for some voting and commenting. I can't promise I'll comment 100% - depends on time limitations - but I will certainly try!

A low vote accompanied by a comment that indicates the voter is looking for photos with a message or story that they did not see in mine. Not what I wanted to hear, but nonetheless an insightful comment that is appreciated.
