uummmmnnn.... chocolate! Thanks, needed the boost!

I thought team Entropy is where we put those who have not been participating? I'm probably wrong though, lol, so ignore me.

Team Zombie. Entropy is still active and has a couple of really accomplished photogs. :-)

I usually suggest teams by the recent history of at least 3 photograpers entering or not entering challenges.

Okay.....back to macro....

Could y'all tell me if these qualify?

Please feel free to critique mercilessly.

It occurs to me that if the 1:1 thing is right, that I'd have to shoot at about 34 mm on my 1.5 sensor, right?

Or does it have to be something special in the lens, too?

Very good pictures, Jeb. VR comes into its own with close ups.

The macro/close up thing is semantic and rapidly spills over into a field of... I don't even know what the field's called, but it's on the semantic farm.

I'm an erstwhile poet and a teacher and a philologist and the structures and functions and developments and history of language fascinate me, but there's a time and a place to argue about them.

A dictionary of the English language does not define or give a definition of words, but offers a guide to common usage. The usage of the word 'macro' has changed. The term originally referred to a reproduction at or magnification greater than life size on the film plane. For a D70 or D200 etc. This would mean that anything bigger than about 25mm falls out of the frame.

For one reason or another, while there are still those who would insist on the original usage for 'true macro', a lot of people think more in terms of life sized or larger in the final reproduction. It's not particularly accurate, because you don't think of huge model gimps glaring at you from hoardings as macro photography, even if they are bigger than models themselves. Usually macro photography is about pretty small stuff.

I think your two photos here are close-ups, but should not be disqualified from anything.

This stone is probably bigger than the camera sensor, so go figure...

if you want to research any of this, the Palace library is nearing complete installation...

Hi everyone.
I was instructed by our dear leader(not mine technically yet:) to construct a poem about one of my photos that died in voting but that i still like.
I chose a haiku, actually

I haven't been in challenges in a while (baby, family, school, work, photo work) but I think with Team Suck I will be able to produce more images without worrying so much about my score. I have been resolving to enter in more challenges (I miss them really) starting with the current challenge.

Thanks all.

:)

Entropy is as good a place as any to not worry and/or suck. My evil twin and I will make it so.

Geez, I fell asleep on the couch and next thing I know I wake up and my wildlife score just dropped from 5.7 to 5.61 in a few votes. I really do suck! I knew it all along of course.

So can someone point me to the Emerald City so I can go ask the Wizard for a sucky task?

I think the picture itself is perfectly haiku and very well suited to the form. You've nailed the form for syllables (5,7,5) but there is a school of thought suggesting that syllables are less relevant to the structure of the English language than to Japanese, and that therefore haiku may be structured less rigorously in that respect, with the important thing being to make the whole pronouncable in one breath. Personally, I feel that your haiku makes it either way, so no worries.

With regard to content, there is an additional stricture to the form which is a seasonal reference. It doesn't have to be as direct as the date or the name of the season, but something like dry leaves blowing, snowdrops dancing or fruit or fresh green leaves, lambs... I think you can see how this works :)

Another thing that sets haiku apart from Western poetry, is that emotional reference is avoided - voided, even. Your 'jolly Buddha' is right on the edge of breaking the rules (I think you get away with it though, as it seems to describe the thing more than the thing or the viewer's feeling). The haiku presents a snapshot and leaves any interpretation of what is presented entirely up to the viewer - which perhaps is why I find your photograph so well suited to the form and vice versa :)

You could take a crack at a revised version, but I doubt that our fearless leader would demand it because, being fearless, he is not afraid to be kind.

You done good, thanks.

The Emerald City is Seattle of course. Though I am not sure where the Wizard lives.

You are indeed most certainly welcome. I have been getting fired up to go out and shoot challenge pictures again, it seems like all I have done lately has been Family/Senior Shots lately as I have had about a gig a week. I have been needing to get out and shoot other things.

Nah, no hash or weed called for in the recipe UNLESS YOU CHOOSE TO ADD IT...there is leeway for adding walnuts, craisins etc...up to you! :-)

Yep here it is:

Brownie recipe (can be doubled)

1 cup sugar
3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder
2 eggs
1/2 cup margarine (or softened butter, if preferred)
1 tsp vanilla
3 tbsps water OR substitute same amount of liquer, ie Bailey's, for Boozy Brownies
OPTIONAL 1/2 cup chopped nuts or similar foreign bodies (ie hash, weed :-)

Sift sugar, cocoa and flour together into a bowl. Add all other ingredients and beat for at least 2 minutes (beater setting on medium seems best). Fold in any foreign bodies. Pour batter into a greased 8-inch pan. Bake at 325 for 30 minutes. Let cool, cut into squares and EAT!
