I always thought that macro was a crisp, clean closeup and the background had that super shallow DOF thing.

True macro photography is with a lens (or crop) that achieves a 1:1 magnification ratio.
However, the term these days are much more vague and the example you give above "crisp clean closeup with a background that is super shallow" suffices.
As long as we are all having fun taking pictures and you enjoy the equipment you have it really doesn't matter.
Cheers

Well said jayson! To me, the word macro is defined by IreneM's macros. But that's just me.

Did get lots of shots last night, nothing exciting in terms of subject matter (and it's for a challenge too). I'll try to get some shots of, say, Lily's nostrils, which are roughly the size of commas. :-)

I thought that the definition of "macro" shot was any close up photo where proportions of the image produced was quite a bit larger than what the eye can see. I don't think bokeh or shallow depth of field defines if it is a "macro" shot or not. Just my opinion.

I was wondering if there is any room in this palatial palace of suck for a guy such as myself. I would love to be part of the rag-tag militia known as suck and as a member I promise to uphold my suckiness. I feel I could contribute much to what is known as suck.

Ummm, was it Raish who did my kitty with the sucker in its mouth? And if so, where did it go?

it's still visible in the oobie/yappie thread - it just disappeared off your profile page, Deb?

Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be enough chocolate for al of team suck, unless we are eating a quarter of a square.
I guess that says how large we have grown.

More chocolate please.

Nicely done! LOL!!!

Hey, somebody left the front door unlocked and I was passing by so I thought I'd take a look around. This is a nice place you got here. Couch is way comfy, that big screen TV is the bomb, and someone left a bunch of chocolate on the coffee table. Mind if I hang around for a while?

Okay.....back to macro....

Could y'all tell me if these qualify?

Please feel free to critique mercilessly.

It occurs to me that if the 1:1 thing is right, that I'd have to shoot at about 34 mm on my 1.5 sensor, right?

Or does it have to be something special in the lens, too?

Dude!!!

This is one of my all time favorite processing works!!!!

Hey, TSers....this guy has a PH Yellow.

Doesn't having a PH Ribbon get him some kind of automatic assignment to please Fearless Leader?

Over & above the entrance hazing?
10/24/2008 12:22:35 PM · #92
As long as we still get to do the entrance hazing. That's my favorite part!
10/24/2008 12:27:01 PM · #93
Here's another piece for all y'all if you didn't get any, please share.

10/24/2008 12:44:10 PM · #94
I expected the hazing ... especially after I ate all your chocolate. I'd jump up off the counch and run out the door if I could, but I'm kinda fat and happy sitting here watching the big screen.

goinskiing has shown brilliant initiative in bribing impressing Team Suck. He's in.

JDubsGirl has received her secret assignment.

Jac's non-secret assignment is to show some love for pictures that have scored low. They do NOT need to be Team Suck pictures, though we do have quite an impressive mother lode to choose from. He must (A) give supportive comments directly to the photos and (B) post the thumbnails here.

Upon fulfillment of the assignments, both users are welcome to Team Suck.

q_o or myers, please remove Ernie from Team Suck as he requested.

I'll leave some comments on your pics here in a second as they are nicely done.

Back to the macro thing. The only true lenses that achieve 1:1 for Nikon are the 60mm 2.8 micro, the 105 2.8 micro, and the 200 f4 micro.
If you want to achieve 2:1 (twice lifesize) or more you can add extension tubes and/or bellows to increase the magnification further.

Generally the working distance (how far the lens from the subject) is just a matter of inches when using a macro lens and often requires a tripod.
Also you can just crop a lot and make it a "macro".

Sometimes I get wrapped in the technical though, it doesn't really matter that much. Pictures are pictures.

Next, which team is appropriate for goinskiing?

I suggest Team Entropy unless someone wants to more a counter offer.

Why is it when there is a Street challenge I suddenly find everything I'm shooting to be horribly, terribly dull??

And why is my Affluence shot sinking from not very high to begin with?

These and many other questions are of course rhetorical and can probably best be resolved by consumption of chocolate....

Because you are trying to hard. ;) That other thread people put you on a pedestal and rightly so.

I suggest bringing a bar of chocolate with you while you are perusing the street. Make sure you get some chocolating fingers on the hand grip too.
