yea... title says it...

(my prices are an canadian dollars....)

I am currently torn here...

I can get a used D80 for about $550... or a New D90 for $1200...

I am really torn here... Currently I have a D50 and am Very pleased with it, mainly I want to get better resolution for blowups...

What does everyone think... ? I can afford the D90 but I am saving for a house so I really don't want to spend much...

since you're saving for a house I'd say the D80. My friend has it and it's a great camera. I'm sure the D90 is better but it's twice as much in price.

I'd say the the D90 because of the higher pixel count but more important the CMOS sensor and lower noise will help with enlargments.

Either that or keep the D50 (that you are happy with) and go for quality glass like a Nikon 80-200 or spend a bit more and pick up a Nikon 70-200 VR.

How about keeping the D50, I still use mine often, it's a great camera.

You could keep the money for your future house or invest in a lens.

on a slight side track... i just picked up a 70-210 f4 (paid $150)... i heard it was pretty close to the 80-200???

I'm with Alain here, its better to buy the good lenses than keep jumping in small increments through the camera models. If you really want to upgrade your camera I'd save your money and get a D300 when you have settled into your house and can afford it, you'll never regret it, especially if you have some great lenses in your bag.

Thanks for the suggestions... I think I will ONLY get a D80 if a really good deal pops up on ebay, otherwise I will wail a bit for the D90 price to drop... maybe a boxing day sale or something =P

Thanks =)

I have a d70 and am about to purchase the 90. I like the cmos and the video option. However, I can't seem to find out if when using my sb800 flash off camera will the on camera flash fire. Will I have two flashes at the same time from different angles?

The d70 will fire the external flash but the built in flash will not activate and illuminate the subject.

Anyone know about this?

the D70 will NOT trigger your sb-800 off camera (i'm pretty sure) , but the D90 will... But with the D90, you will have to have your on camera flash fire... and yes.. the on camera flash will give an annoing little fill light... I have a sb-800 and an sb-600... u use the sb-800 on camera to trigger the sb-600 off camera... i just point the sb-800 away from my subject and the sb-600 is still able to recieve teh signal.... I also have a sb-29 cord for off camera flash at short distances... if you want to use you flash in manual mode (not ttl) you can get a PC sync cord and a hotshoe adapter... that would be the cheapest way... That's what I use now to trigger my alienbees B1600 studio flash,,, BUT the sync cord has been pissing me off lately, so I am looking at getting a pair of packet wizards (wireless flash controllers... but they are alie $150+ each and you need 2... tough call =)

The D70 will fire the sb800 but it is via a "flicker" from the built in flash. The "flicker" does not affect the shot though.
There are times when I would like the off camera flash to fire as well as the built in flash. Will the built in flash on the D90 fire and light up the subject as well as the off cam sb800?

You can have the on-camera flash (giving a fill flash) or simply use as commander mode...it will give a 'pre-flash' that triggers the SB-800/SB-600. If you are using the D90 in M/A/S/P mode you will have to have the on-camera flash 'up' in order to trigger the SB's but it will not give you a 'flash' unless you set it that way.

ahh...just re-read and it appears you WANT it to flash....yes it will. I usually don't want it too...I will reconfirm tonight.

It sounds like Shutter-For-Hire is describing a set up for the D50 which does not have a commander mode.
