Sorry if this has been asked before, but I only just started doing this recently and wondered if it is kosher. Using Lightroom when you import from device you have the option of importing as a DNG and adding to the catalogue. This is very useful for work as DNG is a lot more useful to my clients than a RAW NEF file, BTW DNG is just Adobe's version of a RAW file and is manufacturer independant.
Anyway my question is if this DNG file will suffice as "the original" regarding challenge entries or do I need the NEF file.
I know I can keep doing it the way I've always done it and be sure but it will probably come up sooner or later and thought I'd ask. |

| The original is what ever the camera recorded...for the D300 I believe that is a JPEG, TIFF, or RAW. |

| Probably not, unless your camera produces DNG Raw files. Not sure which other cameras have in camera DNG other then the Pentax K200d, Pentax K10d, Pentax K20d. |

You would need the raw NEF file for your "original". Many importing programs are not allowed to be used do to the way they change the files.
You can just use copy (or cut) and paste to take all your files off the card direct into a file folder to be kept until you no longer need it (when the competition is over for that particular time period) and import your files into Lightroom from that file folder or from the card before you erase them
... or ...
You can download DNG_Camera_Raw_4_3_1 free from Adobe to mass convert your entire file folder to DNG files.
