In respect to sensor size as it realates to image quality what can I expect from these four different Nikon cameras? I'm about to purchase a D90 and want to know if it would be worth moving up.

Image quality is most important...color, noise at high iso and how a 100% crop looks on the photos.

thanks,

d3 and d700 both have the same sensor (full frame) so image quality equals. in terms of noise they're the holy grail, which means you won't see much (if any) noise at up to iso 1600. d2x has a crop sensor, but still really good iq tho not as good in terms of noise as it's succesor's. but prices are low so it's an awesome deal for the value. the d90 has a new designed cmos sensor that is on par with the d300, that on the the other hand has it's bigger advantages on built quality with weather sealing and better grip and so on.

guess it really depends on what you're gonna do. all of them have the same resolution so it just depends if you wanna go fullframe (good for wide angle, but you'll need expensive glass) or stay with a crop sensor (definately the cheaper way to go).
which ever of these you gonna go with neither will disappoint you.

Thanks...so no big image quality between the 90 and 300?

I'm in a similar boat right now, with the choice of the D90 vs. the D300. Though I have enough for the D90 right now, im sticking with my original plan and going for the D300. From what I understand the IQ is pretty similar, but for me its the shooting options that clinch it. The build quality and sealing is a massive factor for any upgrade for me, as it's taken me so long to save for that it has to last.

The 51-point focus system in the D300 are also something im very looking forward to! My main frustrations with my D50 (though it was brilliant for the price) were A) Only 5 focus points meant I was often unhappy with the focus precision and B) Having to enter the menu every time I want to change the metering and focus options.

This video may help. Both have their bonus points, I'm going for build quality over HD video, but thats just my choice. The D90 has a nice spec though.
