Morning guys,

I spent a long time travelling in India and have a colllection of pics (100+) that I think are of high enough quality for a standalone book... from what ive seen in BOrders, Barnes & Nobles etc im in a pretty good position.

However, does anyone know the first steps on the journey of making this happen? Is it just a case of emailing a publisher with some pics and testingthe waters? I know the ppl on this board are well versed in all aspects of business and hoping someone could shed some light on anything helpful.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Regards,

Tez

Either hire an agent, or go to the library and look at a copy of The Writer's Market for lists of publishers' contact info and specifications. You might check out some of the publications from Nolo Press regarding copyright and running a small business.

Printing a photography book is extremely expensive -- I'm thinking you'll need truly outstanding images for a publisher to take a chance on it.

Hi Tez

I'm closely involved with book publishing (I've been co-illustrator of a no.1 bestseller in the US ΓΆ€“ a children's book called Santa Claus) and can tell you, from discussions I've had with marketing departments about other titles, that your book would have to be something very special/unique to be taken on by a standard publisher. If it is niche work then you may have a better chance, but otherwise your best bet is probably something like Blurb, where you can design, produce and market your own books. Photography is a crowded market so you'd have to go in with a very different approach ΓΆ€“ and probably a mass-market one too ΓΆ€“ to gain any interest. For the most part it's all about money I'm afraid.

The blurb route is a good one and quite affordable. I've produced a book with them and I'm happy with the results, but only for a mass-market audience. For premium quality you may have to go to Asuka or something similar, but I've had no experience with them.

If you want to run it by me I can give you some feedback.

Good luck.

Well thanks for your help everybody :) Great as expected.

And Jon, I will take you up on your offer and will indeed run it by you. I had the ideas because i saw a whole lot of crap books with no discernible concept or linking factor in the pictures, and were just a random bunch of bad images... yet somehow theyre on the shelves. SO i figured its worth a shot. The Blurb route sounds interesting and something i will have to look into in more detail and from a financial perspective.

Cheers all.
