Organising Image Archives - DPChallenge Forums

I was wondering what people use to organise DVD's etc of images? I'd like thumbnails (to represent the collections) and some basic description and date information available on my PC. Any suggestions?

Maybe they're thrown off by your metric-system spelling of organizing. =D

Actually, if you're performing searches (Google or forum), you might consider both spellings.

Picasa may fit the bill. My husband uses it. You can even tag images to help with searching.

I know of some people who create contact sheets and develop a coding system to make it easy to find a specific dvd/cd.

The code on the contact sheet will match the code on the related dvd/cd.

Yeah, I'm fairly certain Picasa can create contact sheets with whatever info you want.

My archiving method consists of - blank dvd goes in, copy, dvd comes out, date range with black marker.

That was mine but...

1. A couple of my DVD's had read errors which meant I have lost some images (not many thankfully)
2. When I can't remember what date I'm looking for I have to manually hunt through the DVD's

I use the following methods to organize my images:

I file the CDs/DVDs in CD binders, and number each slot.
Binder 1 Slot 1 = 1-1
Binder 1 Slot 2 = 1-2
and so on.

I use Adobe LightRoom to catalog all my images. I have a catalog for images on my hard drive, and a separate catalog for images on CDs and DVDs.

In Lightroom I create a keyword for each binder/slot. When I import the images from the CD/DVD into Lightroom, I keyword all the images on that CD/DVD with the binder/slot keyword, as well as any other (subject matter) keywords I want to use.

When I need to find an image, I can click any binder/slot keyword in the Lightroom keyword list, and see the images on that CD/DVD. Similarly, I can click a specific subject matter keyword to see all images that are tagged with that keyword.

Previous to Lightroom, I used iMatch to catalog all my images on CD. iMatch was really cool because it would read the volume name for the CD, and then in the catalog, list the volumes like a folder list. After importing the images into the iMatch catalog, I entered the binder/slot number (and the name I assigned to the CD when I burned it) as part of the description for all images on the CD. When I double-clicked the thumbnail in iMatch, it would use the volume name and description information to tell me which CD to insert. Alas, Lightroom does not have the same ability, but my organized "archive and find" method was easy to adapt when I was forced to rebuild my CD catalog from scratch due to a hard drive failure and subsequent data loss.
