Every time I take the photos of the SD card it starts counting at 1 again ...

Shouldn't it continue counting to 10,000 or whatever then roll over like other cameras?

My Kodak is at 100_8688.JPG.

FYI I remove the photos from the card the same way I did with the Kodak ... just go into the DCIM file and select all and cut and paste all to a folder on my desktop to deal with.

I notice that there is a 1 KB file on the card named NIKON001.DSC ... does that have something to do with it?

You need to switch File No sequence to ON. Had this on my D40.

OK ... found it way down on the second page of the tools menu.
