What I want to do is to put up a collection of images for the members of my church to view and possibly obtain.......I don't need for there to be availability from the site itself, but I do want church members to at least be able to bookmark the images so they can send a link.

Would my Workshop collection work for that?

I sort of gather that I can send the link to individual images that are in my workshop collection, but can I send the link to the whpole collection?

All the computers I use are cookied for DPC so I really don't have any way to send the link(s) to myself to check it out.

I just hate the idea of making church members go through the nuisance of signing up for a site just to view images every now and then.

Also, ideally I'd like to be able to have a couple of collections accessible that way, but I'm thinking that the Workshop collection is a once only thing.

I tried to set this up on Flickr, but I don't know their system remotely well enough and couldn't get it right.

I'm not sure I want to spend hours trying to figure that out, either.

If someone knows how that would work there I'd be appreciative....

Jeb, do you use Picasa at all? It's a free program and it has "web albums" that can be set up for privacy very easily. I believe if you put stuff in your workshop, you would have to provide a link for each individual image.

Wouldn't that be nice to have a customer viewable gallery here at DPC, for a small charge of course...

Not like everyone would need it but it would be helpful right?

I downloaded Picasa as an editing program at work to convert RAW images for work.

I didn't set up any accounts or anything.

Is there a system they use that I can send a password or link that anyone can view as long as I've e-mailed them said link/password?

I will admit that I hate slogging through help screens and FAQs for hours trying to discover this info......I've just spent the better part of an hpour trying that on Flickr with NO success.

It appears that there MIGHT be a convoluted process to do that with non-members, but I'm not sure.

I'm even willing to pay for a password protected gallery, if it'll do what I want.

Jeb, you could create a folder in your porfolio, not the workshop, which contains all the pictures you want them to be able to view. Then you just provide a link to that folder. They can look at the first one, then just click through them all. Would that work for now? An an alternative, flickr isn't that bad to set up. I think the pictures "view" better here, though.

Edit to add that if you want to know the link without it being from your log-in, go to your profile page and click on "View this photographer's portfolio", then click on the folder you set up. The link will look something like this:
//www.dpchallenge.com/portfolio.php?USER_ID=30982&collection_id=31084

If I did that right, it takes you to my current folder (10/08).

OK, I just checked, it gives you a link on the side to cut and paste. No password required. Here's the link for what I put up... link

You do have to register, other than that it's competely free. You just select the folder you want to put on line, click Web Albums, and it will ask if you want it private or public. Then it's just a matter of either setting a password or sending a link. It's really simple. I've used the public one a couple times to send pictures to relative, I've never bothered with the private setting. I could try it out and let you know if you'd like.

edit to also add: It gives you a button at the top that says "Share" if you click that you can just enter email addresses and it will send a link to whoever you want.

Yeah, I knew that.....thanks, though......8>)

Problem is, my minister is SUPER paranoid and the portfolio collections are viewable to anyone, anytime......not even hidden until the link is clicked.

While I feel that her paranoia is pretty much unfounded, I want to respect her wishes not to have the shots I take of the kids' activities quite so ready at hand.

I know, I know, there probably aren't a whole ton of pedophiles out there specifically looking for the shots of the kids at my tiny church in a tiny town off the beaten track in rural Pennsylvania, but what can you do about unfounded 'Net paranoia????

And Kelli, what I'm trying to avoid is making people sign up for anything on any level, both for ease, and privacy.

I know there's nothing I hate worse than someone who sends me a link, and I have to spend ten minutes+, and give out my personal info just to look at one friggin' image or read an article.

Hence my frustration.......8>)

I'm starting to think I'm going to have to break down and actually get my own website......8>)

I certainly need ANOTHER monthly expense to get griped at about.

You misunderstood me. You need to register to put your photos up, but no one needs to register to view them. They will just see the pictures. And no one without the link will be able to. They are hidden, unless you give out the info.

flickr might be an option as you can identify who can see the gallery. Though they might have to create their own account as well which you probably want to avoid.

Yep, that's the problem I have with Flickr......you apparently cannot have a private gallery viewable without registering.

Not that *I* have a problem with that, I just don't want to force anyone else to in order to view images I'm doing for a church or charity org that I'm doing work for....

You could always open a smugmug, Exposuremanager, or whoever account, they all have password protected galleries and allow purchasing prints at cost, or with a price of your choice. That way you can also sell prints of other things as well.

Pictology

They have a password protected site. You must have the password to get in unless you click the direct link that they send you in an e-mail.

Free to try and as a free member, you can have up to 2 "events" uploaded at a time. They do fulfillment or let you self-fulfill orders.

I used them while my site was under construction. Nice service.

So.....I never could get Pictology to open.....

I set up a Picasa web album.....or more specifically, I revisited/added an album, but for whatever reason, I seem to not be able to upload images.....it says it wants me to download the Picasa software.

I know when I set up my Blogger account, I didn't download anything and I have a couple images posted.

Is it just my browser, or do I *have* to download Picasa to upload pics to my computer just to upload to my web albums?

I *HATE* this!

It's times like this that make me feel sooooooooooo inept!!!

I couldn't find the answer on the FAQs, or in the previously asked questions.

The upload issues/questions were all about not being able to upload WITH it already installed.

I do have it at work, I just don't have it here.

You do have to have Picasa on your computer. You don't have to use it to upload pictures to your computer, but you need to use it to upload to the Picasa web albums. Picasa will gather your pictures from wherever they are located. Inside of Picasa, there a button to upload to your web album. You choose whatever pictures you want, then hit the upload button. It's very fast. It's a small program and shouldn't cause you any problems. There is even a Picasa 3 (beta) version now. It's lets you make movies, gift cd's and custom collages.

You need to have the uploader software on the computer your using. It only takes a couple of minutes to do. I use Picasa private galleries for all my client viewing.

Jeb ... if all else fails ... I could give you a website on my personal website space at homestead.com with the church name even in the URL and lock it with a password that you could pass out ... I currently have over 4 GIG sitting around, so could give you a very simple website of a GIG or so and people could email you with the numbers of the photos that they would wish to obtain from you or sumpin. ... Email me at Greetmir@yahoo.com and ask me any questions that you would like and let me know what you think ...
