I ordered a boxed version of the CS4 design suite weeks ago, but it hasn't shipped yet, my status still says "pending", so I thought I'd like to start with a trial version of Photoshop, but I can't get it!
Maybe I'm having a senior moment - help would be appreciated. Thanks. |
You're not having a Senior moment, I got in to an argument with Adobe this am about that, Im in the same boat as you and they are telling me that there is no download available and if it were it can not be activated right now... I was forced to call in my order last month as I was upgrading from CS3.3 Design and Web premium suites and had to order boxed versions which I usually just get the download versions. Anyway they kept telling me I was SOL till late Oct or early Nov...

So how come a bunch of people earlier in this thread already HAVE CS4 on their computer?
Does that mean you can download a paid version, but not the trial? I HAVE paid for it, dang it..... they just haven't shipped it me yet! ggggggrrrrrrrrrr

Well I didn't actually investigate my theory, so I can't tell you for sure =)

Yes, it seems that although the paid downloadable version is available, it cannot be downloaded as a trial (without paying first). Strangely, I'm almost sure that the downloaded version still can be installed as a trial, but then you've already paid for it, so what's the use?
I'd guess that they are delaying the trials to get folks who are anxious but sitting on the fence to spring for the upgrade/purchase.

You are correct. When you get to the screen where you enter your license number, there is a radio button for selecting 'trial version' instead.
So yeah, it's interesting. You can purchase it and download it and install it as purchased or trial. But you can't just download a trial version.

I finally upgraded from my PS CS. Only took three versions to convince me.
It installed fine under Vista64, and works, but...
A brand new release, and it doesn't recognize my D90 files yet? I guess the RAW converter in Lightroom 2.1 is really still beta, and they chose to release CS4 before the raw converter was finished? Or is there something wrong with my installation?
Here's a 15% discount for anyone who wants one! It works!

Hey thanks for that, it made my decision a little easier. I was thinking of just getting the Photoshop student version, it was $299. That little discount took the upgrade for the whole Creative Suite Standard down to close to $400, so for $100 more I just upgraded my whole suite. I'm downloading it right now. |

Thanks - Now I'm poorer.
I also picked up LightRoom, which I've been toying with for awhile.
David - I need some lessons!

Does the discount work for the student edition?
ETA: completely ticked about the lack of trial. I'm trying to figure out how to make Flash website and the labs are only open at certain hours. Oh well, at least there are labs...

I just tried the 15% off link and went into the education store. It doesn't look like it works on the student versions.
edit- sending you a pm now :P

The trials are available, adobe just hide the links for now.
Feel free to moderate this post if I'm posting something I shouldn't.
Login to adobe (a free account)
Go to the download centre and start any trial download (lightroom will do)
Cancel this download straight away, this sets a cookie in your browser.
Then, go here.
//trials.adobe.com/Applications/Photoshop/CS4/Win/ADBEPHSPCS4_LS1.exe
and here
//trials.adobe.com/Applications/Photoshop/CS4/Win/ADBEPHSPCS4_LS1.7z
One is the unzipper/installer (hense it being about 1.2mb) and the other is the actual download, about 850mb.
If any one needs links for other CS4 software, PM me.

so what are the biggest improvements over CS3? I'm actually still using CS2 and didn't install CS3 (my bro offered me a copy) since I couldn't see too much that was different.
Am I missing out on something revolutionary? |

Correct scaling at any magnification does it for me. 64 bit capability is another, for when I eventually go 64bits, soon hopefully. There are a whole lot of other things but I can't remember right now. |

looks interesting... just not sure if my 1.4ghz, 2gb ram beast could take it without crying though.
Would my plugins work on it though? Like Color Efex, Alien Skin, Lucis, Flaming Pear etc etc? |

| Photoshop CS4 crashed on me. :-P First crash of Photoshop in many a year. It's a good release with many interesting features, such as content aware resizing, and improved interface elements. It seems much, much slower on my machine than PS CS3 though. I've got a Core2 Duo 2.13 with 3.5 gigs of RAM. I think the bottleneck might be video, as I understand that it now uses the GPU and the video card's memory more aggressively than before. I've got a GeForce 8500GT with 128 mb of RAM. Not too bad, so it's a little disappointing. |

I'm not sure whether it turns on GPU use by default. Look under Edit>Preferences>Performance and GPU settings are at lower left. If your GPU is being used, make sure your drivers are up to date! |

It was using the GPU by default on install. Apparently it will do so if it determines the card is powerful enough. I've just updated the driver, so we'll see how it goes. |

DOn't know about CS4, but 3 will run on my old machine (vintage 2001) and it's only got 1Gb of ram and 1.5ghz. Not saying it runs as well as on my newer box (2.33 ghx 4Gb dual core) but the only really noticeable difference is if you open many images at once or on some filter/effects.
The ol' box is being passed on to the kids later this week. My new box ( 2.4ghz quad core, 4gb and 64 bit vista) is sitting beside me awaiting the install of master suite 3 and CS4 upgrade as well as LR2. I got the CS4 upgrade and LR2 both, shipped in boxes (so I got the CDs) from Adobe for $312. Nearly $100 savings. I wasn't going to get CS4 but the combo deal made it seem like a reasonable thing to do.
Been reading up on some of the CS4 changes and I'm looking forward to getting into it. It is a bit annoying that it won't install (or at least offer to) ones plugins and such. Kinda lame.

Just link to your old plugin folder in Preferences. |
