I currently have a Canon Digital Rebel XT, and am looking to upgrade to a better camera. I have been looking at a 40D for a while, but sense the 50D has come out, I was wondering if it is worth the extra 500 dollars (I need basic lens because have a buyer for my old camera and he needs my old lens).
I can get a 40D on amazon with a 28-135mm lens for $1100.
I can get a 40d on craigslist for $750, but it is only the body and I will have to live with my telephoto lenses for a while.
Then I can get a 50d on amazon for $1600 with the same lens. It is worth the extra 500 dollars to get the 50d?
I really am getting tired of my rebel and its bad ISO noise and lack of newer features.
So what do you all think? Thanks! |

Only you can answer those questions.
What will help though is looking at the features of the 40D and 50D side by side (dpreview.com) and determine if the differences are something you can't live without.

I recently bought a 40D, despite the 50D having been released. I compared them side to side, and decided that the the extra features of the 50D weren't really worth the cost for me. Basically, the biggest changes are the improved LCD screen (and it is really pretty!) and the increase in MP, both of which seemed nice, but unnecessary for me. That's not to say that it woudldn't be worth it to you, but you just have to weigh out how important these features are and whether you have the money to spend. I also upgraded from a Rebel XT, and the 40D was more than enough upgrade.
A suggestion though. I've heard less than great things about the 28-135. From what I've been told, it was originally manufactured as a lens for full-frame sensors, but did so poorly that Canon's trying to push the lens off as a crop-sensor kit lens in order to get rid of them. It's not great for crop-sensors, as they don't go very wide at all. Lots of people get that lens with the package deal because then they can sell the lens on craigslist for $300 and keep the body.
I did end up getting a kit lens with the 40D, but decided on the 17-85 (equivalent range of the 28-135 on a full-frame sensor). It was just slightly more expensive but worth it to me for the wide angle.

I had the 28-135 with my 10D.
For a variety of reasons, I'd recommend against it.
Go with something that's ~17-something and at least f4, preferably f2.8 |

| Coming from and xti and having used a 40d and 50d I'm going 50d. The screen alone makes it worth it to me. It is impossible to check for perfect focus on a screen with 230,000 pixels but at 920,000 its as sharp as a computor monitor. If one of your lenses wasn't focusing right you wouldn't even know until you got home and saw them on your screen. So for me 50d is my path. Id get the new 5d but it only flash syncs up to a 200 and the 50d goes to 250. |

| You would seriously pass on a 5Dmk2 because it syncs slightly slower than the 50d? |

| I can only dittoes Spazmo99's comment. Had a 10D and the 28-135 lens. Gave the lens away a long time ago. Have the new 50D (passed up the 40D) and am absolutely ecstatic with my new toy. Still learning all the new details in the devil. |

No no no I'm getting both so I can have the best of both words! lol I just use strobes outdoor in the sun and it help bring down the ambient. I'm getting the 50d first since the mad rush seems to be over and then the 5dmkII when they are actually in stock next year. |
