Download finished just before I had to leave for work... now I won't even get to see what it looks like until tonight! :(

The fact that all zoom levels display properly was enough reason for me to upgrade.
From my observations so far, the program opens quickly and is very responsive.
Don't forget to copy over your downloaded and purchased plug-ins from CS3 (or at least load the CS3 plug-in folder as a second plug-in folder in Preferences). The extract filter is not in CS4, but the filter from CS3 works. |

I suppose, but what filters that are 8-bit only require 16 bits of data? They're mostly artistic filters that wouldn't be used on a photograph and then subsequently altered drastically (i.e. levels, curves, exposure adjustments, etc.). |

For any other poor college students out there, adobe does indeed have an education store where the prices are much much lower (Photoshop CS3?4? Extended for $300). It's just very well hidden.

i'll dissagree .. i have a 100$ canvas (now garbage) with obvious step marks (posterization) caused by 8 bit filters ..
ran the same one through in 16bit .. no posterization
so i would like to see ALL the filters 16bit
so i can do all my work in 16bit relm then down sample for printing only
only artistic like |

Which filter did you use that caused posterization? Did you do any adjustments afterward?
Also, was it not evident before sending the file to be printed? |

Gaussian blur
it was observable IF one pushed the contrast high in those areas
this was a pure blue sky with a few repeated dust flecks
which rather than clone out i wanted to just blur the whole sky
(lazy me)
in 8bit it messes up
in 16 bit it worked fine
(same happend using the healing brush in 8bit mode/ but i was warned by the the 100$ canvas & now check carfully priour to sending out for prints ..)
a similar problem happened with PTgui & using 8bit jpgs to stitch / they ALL had artifacts in subtle graded areas
using 16bit tiffs i haven't had an issue ..

I had a quick question about upgrading. I have the Creative Suite 2 Premium student edition. Do you guys think it would be worth upgrading the whole package at $499 to the CS Design Standard with Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, and Acrobat. Or just buy the student version of CS4 for $299?
I would use photoshop a lot, but the other programs would be hardly ever. |

Question for Adobe (and ya'll in case you have an answer):
Why does CS4 have to pretend it's a "brand new install" and totally forget the settings I had with CS3? I mean ... how hard would it be to bring across my preferences, my filters, my actions, my scripts? And I know CS4 has new layout capabilities, but why not offer the option of bringing across my old familiar layout?
I just hate that every time I install a new version of Photoshop I have to set up my "working environment" all over again.

On the plus side: I love the new content-aware scaling!

| How do I convince my boss that I need the upgrade, when really the only work thing I use the program for is to make little link buttons for the website? :-) |

That's what I was trying to figure out myself until the tech guy came running in all excited saying the guy upstairs told him to take orders.
That was easy. |

Say that with the new Photoshop you can spruce the website up even more!
Garantee a 50,000,000 increase in revenue over the next four years and then quit in 3.

Boy, I hear you on the workspace issue. It seems that a lot of that could be migrated. With a major update like this, I suppose there's a good chance that some third party plug-ins would cease working, so in a way I can see that they are taking the conservative approach, but just not doing it at all seems ridiculous.
I haven't tried the content-aware scaling yet, but I am really pretty impressed so far with the application performance in general. The GPU-based acceleration works fine with my nVidia QuadroFX 570 card. I did have to update the driver, but that's good practice anyhow.
The interface has really undergone a major revision, that will take a little while to get used to! From what I've seen, the new interface is a very positive change. |

That is what I would miss too, I do use acrobat more than illustrator and indesign. I always make PDF's of my papers and work for school instead of sending them as .docs. |

Yeah, my first reaction last night was "oh boy, I feel like a fish out of water". With so much new, and without my previous "working environment" to call home, I almost felt like it was my first time using Photoshop and having to learn all over again. Really, it's not that bad, but that was my initial reaction to it.
So far none of my plugins have failed under CS4. I simply copied them from CS3 to CS4 (didn't even bother reinstalling them, just copied the individual plugin directories). I was a little worried about Color Efx Pro 3.0 as I depend on that one a lot, but it's working fine. As is Photokit Sharpener. I still need to make sure all of my actions are working... I'll play with those tonight.

What am I doing wrong? I can't find a trial download link, I only ever get as far as: "Complete the following fields to be notified by e-mail when Adobe® Creative Suite® 4 trials are available."
I ordered a boxed version of the CS4 design suite weeks ago, but it hasn't shipped yet, my status still says "pending", so I thought I'd like to start with a trial version of Photoshop, but I can't get it!
Maybe I'm having a senior moment - help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

I'm going out on a limb here, but maybe the trials aren't available yet? ;P |
