I'm looking to buy some pocket wizards before too long and because the cost of these is so great, im looking for cheaper flashes that have a very good recycle rate. the problem is, specifications for recycle rate are only given for full power, so its hard to know how fast they really can fire. I know canon 580's 550's and 430's can go down to 0.1 seconds when not firing full power, and the sigmas do pretty well too, but does anyone know of cheaper alternatives? they dont have to be dedicated; i'll be using them as slaves

You can get a quantum turbo pack that will cycle your flash faster, but remember, "speed kills".

I melted the diffuser on one of my slaves by "flashing too fast". :)

You can also get "Yellow Tube" which is when the plastic diffuser on your flash starts to turn yellow from excessive heat. I guess that's OK if you want a warmer tone to your light, butgenerally, I'd say it's bad. You can also overload the charging circuitry and kill it that way.

Honestly, if you want fast cycling flashes, you should get a real strobe of some type and shoot on low power.

guess it really depends on what you're going for with these, but what i'm using with my cactus wireless set is a nikon sb24. i believe it has a recycle time of about a second when set to full power, but at 1/8th and 1/16th power it fires about 12 times in a row when shooting at 3fps with my fuji s3.
it also features a burst mode that does a series of fires at 1/8th or 1/16th power at up to 8 fires per second.
as it kinda old it is much bigger and heavier than a sb800 plus was designed for analogue camera's so it doesn't have ttl but if you're only going to use it with your pw's that perfectly fine. i got mine for 50€ in a local camera store and am looking for a second one on ebay.
