Just installed a new 500GB drive where I want to store all my photos, to clear out space in an existing drive. When the move is complete the photos will be wiped off the existing drive and I want to make sure LR 1.4 will still recognize them in their new location with all their associated keywords, edits, etc.
I know Lightroom is *supposed* to do this automatically and recognize a new location when source files have moved, but before I move 150GB of photos to the new drive I want to ask if anyone here has done this before -- and what problems they have encountered, and how to avoid/fix them.
Thanks in advance.

If you move them with LR then LR will recognize the new location.
If you move them outside of LR, the catalogue entries will still be there but you will have to tell LR where the new location is. This is done by right clicking the folder in red and selecting locate missing files.

Thanks. Since not all photos are in my LR catalog, I'll have to move them outside of LR ... in that case, do I have to right click on every folder in the collection, or will subfolders automatically get recognized? My root "My Pics" folder is not in the LR catalog, so there could be a lot of clicking in my future :>). Reason I ask is I'm going to reorganize some of my folders when moving, so I may be better off doing that on the existing drive, maybe with LR, before moving to the new drive. |

It would be even easier with LR 2.0 as it has support for separate drives rather than just catalogue folders. ;o)
Anywho, I'm not sure if subfolders would be included in the find action. In order to try though, the root would have to be in the catalogue.

| Click file, and go to automatic import, and click settings, you should be able to set the default location of your pictures, and then set the new location, hit import and hey presto. |

That would work for the ones not already in the catalogue but the ones already there would be marked as duplicates and not imported.

if you were to reinstall lightroom, and run a fresh import - wouldn't that solve all issues ?
well at least with importing to a new location. if you have all kinds of presets that's another story i guess. though i think you can import those too - if you export them.

OT, but consider storing your photos on more than one HD. If it fails, they're gone.

you can check/uncheck the box ( in the import dialog ) that asks whether to ignore suspected duplicates to possibly work around that scenerio.

| Sorry - I don´t have the answer BUT I would love to find out if this is possible. I have done this a few times, t.i. moved the whole set to a new location and LR reports them as missing and does not find them again... How can I move all the pictures to a new location and be sure that LR will find them?? Did you find out or?? :o) |

Of course it doesn't do it by magic. You have to tell it where the new location is. When the browse window pops up you have to navigate to the new location to tell Lightroom the new location.
