| In Adobe's CameraRAW I can have the histogram show me blown highlights and too dark shadows - is there a way to set the histogram in Lightroom to do the same? |

Yes.
Mouse over the triangles in the upper left and right corners and the areas will be highlighted in the image.
... if you right click on the triangle a menu pops up and you can select to show the clipping all the time, not just on mouse over.

See, that's what I figured - on both counts. But I don't have any little triangles in the histogram to mouse over...
Ah! Never mind - they're there, but only in the develop mode. I was trying to find them in the library mode. Silly me.

Right click in the histogram and then select all the clipping options you want.
Yes. Only in develop mode.
