Hey everyone,

I head out on thursday for London. Spend 4 days there then head to Paris for a couple of days. This is part of my senior tripish thing through my school. I'm pretty pumped about it. Most of the time is gonna be lead by tour guides and i think we move pretty quickly, but in the off chance of getting some free time, what should i be shootin?

I'll be takin 3 4gb Cf cards, so i think I'll be set on room. I'll be taking loads and loads of pics as I've never been over to Europe. Only place out of country I've been is Mexico. I'm uber looking forward to it. Any advice on shooting locations would be awesome.

Well, I was lucky enough to get to go twice this year on business trips: I would take the train to Victoria Station and then start walking--lots of stuff is pretty close by there--step down the quieter streets and alleys, too. Hyde Park is nice, and the architecture is head-turning everywhere. If you get a chance to snag a train to Brighton for an afternoon, you will like it, too. I did get to Bath briefly, would like to spend days there if I could.

In the stations, look for the little Upper Crust shop: snag a baguette with bacon and Taw Valley cheddar--addictive!! And good re-fuel on a train ride :-)

some few of the hundreds of images I took are here (not much time yet to screen, pp, etc.)

I took two 4G, two 8G, and two 2G cards--still had to offload them to my laptop. (I was shooting RAW+JPEG, though...)

You are guaranteed to have a good time--enjoy, and share the images when you get back!!

Ryan, so awesome you're going, I'm sure you're very excited.

I only had my SLR on my last trip to southern Europe, only had an advantix film camera for the summers that I worked in Denmark and traveled around the north... man I could have brought back some pics!

I've never been to London, but Paris is awesome. Make sure to just wander around, wander around the cool cobblestone village-esque streets of neighborhoods like Montmartre, which is sort of like the artsy district.

Obviously do the Eiffel tower, maybe do it at dusk/sunset to get some dramatic city shots... Notre Dame is an insane work of architecture, drop by there and head to the other end of the Isle de la cite at sundown too to catch sunset with the groups of picnickers and people just hanging out and playing music... so awesome.

Make sure to catch some street-performers, they go all out there, and in subway tunnels (btw the metro is very easy to use)

I never made it to Sacre-Couer but I heard that I should have, that neighborhood is supposed to be really cool too.

Aside from photography, check out the museums if you have time, def worthwhile to have that under your belt.

Don't take the train trip to Versailles unless you either have the time or are a history buff... its a magnificent place, but it takes half a day and if you have limited time there is enough to see within the city.

Take your time, sit at cafes, drink coffee, people watch, come back with some sick pics, good luck.

Paris and London both suffer from the same problem - They are capital cities.

The problem with this, is whilst everything is grand and beautiful, is that the rest of the world logs onto Flickr, types in Paris, and the same tourist hot spots show up 1000s of times.

I'm from the UK, and I'd only go to London if I *had* to - of course, some of the architecture is stunning, but go to some other British cities like Bath, and it makes London look ugly in comparison.

Paris is a truly lovely city, and you really can just get on the Metro, get off anywhere and wonder about, get back on the Metro and return to where you began. I admit, that when I went to Paris I did ensure I went to most of the touristy places, but I also ensured I spent a good few hours every day just wondering about, and despite what people may tell you, the Parisians are all right really ;)

La Defense is the big business district (I think one of the largest in Europe)in Paris, and at night it's really stunning with all the lighting and signage - got a bloody big shopping centre too haha.

If you want an amazing view over paris, forget the Eifel tower, instead go up the Montparnasse tower...this is the view from it...

You get to go right to the very top of the building, where it's outdoors so no silly glass to be taking pictures through, there's actually a Heli pad on top which you can stand on and take nice panoramas to stich together when you get home.

Oh, and the Champs Elysee is pretty amazing!

However,

There is one place you must, must go in Paris.

Angelina, it's on the Rue de Rivoli, number 226 and they do literally the world's best hot chocolate! Made with lots of cream and high quality chocolate, it's so chocolatey they give you a glass of water with it!

Anyway, have fun!!!

This trip turned out to be really incredible. I was pretty much stuck with exactly what the rest of my group was doing. I was really limited in that regard. I ended up bringing home around 1000 shots. Not nearly as many as I was expecting. I actually got the opportunity to go up to the top of the Eiffel Tower, which was absolutely breathtaking.

I have about 5 possible pano's that I'm gonna try and stitch together. I'll be posting pics within the next week.

Oh and thanks for the advice everyone.

Off to editing for now,
Ryan
