Yes, and No. Yes, we want quality photos, but part of the "Challenge" in DPChallenge, is having a quality photo that fits the theme/subject of the weekly challenge being entered. If we were only concerned about quality photos then we'd just have a Free Study every week.
In the FWIW column, I haven't looked at, or voted on, any of the Grimm Fairy Tale photos yet - nor do I have an entry in this one. |

I'm having a hard time voting when the models are too young to be believable as the characters... in most instances I have overlooked the fact that there are pre-pubescent protagonists and voted according to the quality of the image - regardless of title :-)
You have rated 82 of 83 images (99%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 2 images (2%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.1585.

I usually vote on the picture and wether it fits the theme to me. I usually don't vote based on the title or anything, they really don't matter to me. (though I will comment oh whether the title makes sense to me or not, it just won't effect the score I give the photo)

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. We've had numerous challenges where the title of the entry was specified to mean something.
From the challenge description: The title of your entry should be the title of the tale it is based on. |

And one of my points was that the "little red riding hood" was a version that came from the original "the red cap", so are we going to penalize a good picture because the person confused the title being the two stories practically the same?
On another note, why do some people leave comments that are not constructive at all? I agree with the fact that everybody is entitled to their opinion, but come on, if we are going to leave a comment, why not saying the reason why we did not like something in the picture and maybe a way to solve it?, remember that a lot of people here including me are learning so I think some of us will appreciate some constructive criticisms so we can improve. Then again this is just my opinion. |

Sometimes a comment left represents a viewers reaction. Even one that is conversational in nature shows that it made the viewer think of something related. There are, however, some occasional comments that don't really say much ("Nice shot") or are vague about whether the viewer liked it or not ("Interesting"). Then there is the recently famous "=]"

(pssst...hey, take a peek at the 32 comments you've left: "Great Job", "Nice Capture")
Takes time to make constructive comments (even smilies for that matter, he-he). Most people don't have the time for it. |

I tried this approach and the keys above 4 are all missing...I guess it is now time to vote on the Grimm challenge... |

At least those comments although vague were not harsh or mean, my point,(unfortunetly mistaken) is about the harsh comments without any help to improve it. I understand that people do not have the time to make comments, I dont even have the time to vote sometimes, even though I always try to do it. |

In many cases, I think the commenter may be someone who is using the commenting as a learning experience for themselves, and they may be able to identify just that they don't like it, or maybe why they don't, but they do not yet have the skill to be able to offer suggestions. I sometimes get initially offended at a newbie here telling me that my entry is lacking after I've looked at their entries, but then I usually stop to realize this is the same thing I am doing, and I frequently leave criticisms on the entries of people with far more talent and skill than myself. |

I was not trying to offend anybody, you don't have to get ironic or sarcastic, I was talking about the harsh comments to start with. But if you want to talk about facts, here are some: my 32 poor comments are 100% nice words "great job" "nice capture" at least those are encouraging words. you have 5339 comments which 83.35% of them are useless or unknown signs like -{, -[, etc...so please do not take it personal, we are suppose to be here to learn from each other.

Math can be challenging at times, can't it? :-D
5339 comments, 112 smilies (did for one challenge) comes out to a little over 2%. He-he. 83.35%. Good one! |

Looks as though I am going to be be penalized for a spelling error.
Why Have so many called their photo "Little Red Riding Hood" No.20, in my research is called "Little Red Cap." I do not believe The Brothers Grimm titled their tale Little Red Riding Hood.
The title of your entry should be the title of the tale it is based on.

Shouldn't we concentrate on the quality of the picture??? isn't that what this site is about? please give me a break, little red riding hood or the red cap, who cares? is the picture good? so judge the picture, not the spelling or the title. |
And all the comments I have had over the years regarding the title not fitting the photo, for the record as the photos come up on my screen (widescreen) the title is not visible unless I scroll the the thumb nails, meaning I vote the quality of the photo and the theme.

Dunno about you, but I learn better from comments that point out the dust on my backdrop, my tilted horizon, my lack of contrast or my poor lighting than I do from "great job". Yeah, sometimes the comments sting but when I stop and look at what they really say I find they're usually spot-on, often about something I'd overlooked but now watch for. (Usually... not always...)
Sure, I like complements, they keep me plugging away, but I learn more from the "harsh" ones :)
Having said that, my Grimm score belies the fact that I've learned anything here! lol |

My first 2 votes were 8s and it's been steadily dropping ever since, not that I'm surprised. Got one nice comment, one critique and one that seems annoyingly sarcastic.
