Im going to buy a wide angle lens and a flash for my 40D over the next few months and would like to get a few opinions on what you think would be best?

28mm is my widest atm i used to have 17-55 lens and i liked results like:

i shouldnt of got rid really but ah well it wasnt that good of a lens.

i like the 17mm on them pictures but would also liketo be able to go abit further and get images like:

Id also like to use it in portraighture and group shots e.g band promos etc

As for the flash i would use it mainly for portraight use etc.

As for budget, id rather see what the options are so i have a target to aim for :)

Thanks Jay

check out the thread titled 'sigma 10-20 or tokina 11-16...'

Check these out:

tokina 11-16mm

The reviews are for nikon... but same idea... Skip the sigma... sigma is only good for macro lenses... the others are all crap... (that's my own opinion so please dont chew me out on it...)

The Tokina is susposed to be really good... I have a nikon 10.5mm fisheye which is a circular 180 degree view, where as those lenses you are thinking about give a linear view... MUCH less coverage, but linear... i'm going to be getting the tokina 11-16 soon... BUT if you can afford it, go for the canon 10-20mm... (i'd get the tokina and save my money...)

Tokina started as a division offshoot from Nikkor (nikon) so they have really good optics...

When I went thru this, it was 10-22 or Tokina 12-24.... Prefered the feel of the Tokina but went for the canon due to the 2mm.... It's huge at that end.

If you want eTTL.... 580 is best. Then you could do 430EX (I think there is a new model 2 due out or just out) or the Sigma super. You could also get an older 550EX.

The 580/550 can be a master to the others (not sure about the sigma as master, so check if you are going that path).
